Savage Cheek Riser

Hey TFL,

Got my girlfriend a Savage Model 11 Youth Trophy Hunter XP .308. Right now it's sporting a hillbilly rigged cheek riser made from an old scope coat and secured by boot strings and she's in need of something that's both comfortable and raises her head about another 3/4"-1" off the stock. Anyone have any suggestions?

Alas you should have gotten her a Savage Lady hunter instead of the youth model. The lady hunter has a much higher comb than a youth or even a regular model 11.

Or I could buy a $350 rifle and a $100 cheek riser and have the same thing for half the price. Not trying to be an arsehole but that was my reasoning. The lady hunter was nice but hard to find and usually over $800

How high do you have the scope mounted? Are you using a scope with 50 - 60mm objective lens?

It's the package rifle with the Nikon 3-9x40. I don't use scopes much but she likes them so I don't really know much about it.

Something that I've used is a cheap, elastic ammo cuff for the buttstock. Something like this. LINKY!

Underneath that ammo carrier, I add standard black pipe insulation (cut in half, lenthwise) to raise the comb to the appropriate heights. Total cost to elevate a comb is about $5.00. I've got several of these on rifles.

Here's a picture to illustrate. I used a piece of a common swim noodle to provide contrast, but hopefully you'll get the idea. Put that swim noodle/pipe insulation under that buttstock ammo holder until the comb height suits your lady.

I think that the ammo holder is a useful accessory, and all that's necessary is to pad it until it's the right height.

Check out "Beartooth comb raising kit". I bought mine @ Bass Pro and they currently sell for $22.

It has a neoprene sleeve which goes over the stock and then several different sized pads which rest between the comb and the outer sleeve. I used mine on a shotgun but they work on rifles as well.

It looks similar to Paw Paw's rig but a bit prettier. :) PP's rig looks very functional but we are trying to satisfy a lady:D

Cowboy_mo mentioned the Beartooth kits:

I have two of these. One on a rifle. One on a shotgun. A little tough to put on initially, but stays put well once in place. The variety of foam inserts allow for very personalized adjustment in 1/8" increments. Note that this may also make the comb feel a little wider. The inserts are rather firm, but definitely feels softer than plastic or rubber combs.

I also had have an Accu-Riser:

I got the ambidextrous one, because I shoot left-handed. It comes with two interchangeable cheek pieces that will raise the comb either 5/8" or 1-1/8". It can be bolted onto the stock or strapped on. Mine is just strapped on, but it stays put. This is definitely trimmer than the Beartooth kit. The cheek piece is rubber and comfortable.

Awesome y'all, think I may go with one of the bear tooth one, comfort is key here so it being foam will probably be better for her than plastic

First, lower the scope. Get some low Burris Zee or Weaver rings.
Then get a neoprene, not elastic, buttstock cartridge carrier.

Hey PawPaw

Is that a Lady sponge on that stock ?

Naw, dude, that's a piece of a kid's swim noodle. I used it for contrast, and actually, it goes under that shell holder. Once it gets under the black shell holder, you can't tell what color it is. I think the one on my .30-30 is pink, or maybe pale yellow. I forget.
