I am seriously thinking about purchasing a new rife for coyote hunting while keeping the price as low as possible. I'm looking at the Savage Axis in .223. I realize it doesn't have the accutrigger and was wondering what people thought of theirs and what the trigger pull was on this rifle.

The trigger is nothing special, better than a milspec M4 trigger by leaps and bounds though, if you are really concerned and want to upgrade to a Timney if they ever get back in stock.

not really much of a "value gun" guy myself. but if i were to chose one out of the remington 710, Ruger American, Savige Axis. it would most definitely be the Ruger. ive shot one in 270 and they are an accurate and handy little rifle for not alot of money. to me the Axis just feels cheep and i hate the stock
 
I am a Savage fan, but in my opinion, the Ruger American is a much better rifle than the Axis. If Ruger had put the American in a nice stock and put a pretty finish on the metal, they could have passed it off for a high end rifle.
 
I agree with everything said. For entry centerfire rifles, the best value is a ruger american, with the remington 783 or 770 coming in next. (I think the remington 710 has been discontinued.) The problem is that the original poster wanted a rifle for varmints in .223. Neither the ruger nor the remingtons are offered in those chamberings.

You can get a ruger american chambered for .22-250 and that could be an alternative. Another possibility would be to spend 150 bucks more and get a howa chambered in .223, which is a much better rifle, by light years, than the ones already discussed. If you still want the savage brand, I would pass on the axis and get a savage 11 hunter. They list for 525 $ and the street price is usually a little less.

Of course the gorilla in the room is finding any rifle chambered for .223 right now and .223 ammunition at reasonable prices.

+1 on the Ruger American in .22-250.

I also agree with the Howa suggestion, but they chamber it in .204 Ruger as well. Theres something about having a varmint gun capable of 4400 fps that makes me grin :D
 
@Mr. Chunter: I read your reply and immediately did a face palm and think, "how stupid of me for overlooking the .204 ruger". Especially when I have a ruger 77KVT in .204 and love it. For a dedicated varmint cartridge, the .204 ruger is hard to beat. Good suggestion.
 
I sadly do not own .204 but hope to change that soon. I saw a Savage 11 blued/synthetic .204 for $300 in the local classifieds the other day, called the number and of course it was gone :( maybe Ruger will start offering the American in .204 someday.
 
@Mr Chunter: Good Luck. I hope you find a .204. Nothing difficult about the cartridge other than a different cleaning rod and a different drop tube for my powder measure.
 
The only problem I see with the Ruger American is that they don't offer it in a southpaw edition. I have two left-handed teenaged grandsons and they both got left-handed Savage Axis rifles for Christmas. We've sighted them in and they seem to be very accurate rifles. Not the best-looking rifle in the world, but they seem to stack the bullets real close together.

Lot of zip on the 204 but how long do the barrels last?

Of the two the 22-250 has a much wider range of bullets offered, ergo more versatile and the whole range of 224 bullets available.

The 22-250 can rack them out there at 4100 fps if you use the 40 gr
 
I have read several places that a .204 barrel will outlast a .22-250 by a good bit. Those 4000+ loads are hard on the barrels of both calibers for sure. But I've never shot anything I own enough to wear the barrel out, and may never. I cant afford to shoot enough to wear anything out right now anyway :mad:
