Savage 99 vs Browning BLR: go!

Yea kinda half hearted, coulda pushed them as a No.3 type and offered a nicer more potent No.1 style rifle.

Savage 99

I have one in 300 Savage (rotary magazine), my buddy has one in 308 (detachable magazine). we both think "mine is better than his" and both are 1" MOA shooters.
never even handled a BLR, but they can be had in 7mm Rem Mag and 300 Win Mag !! as well as a host of other great calibers. :D

I guess that, like a lot of the old classics, its design is just too expensive to make and sell and make a profit on. What a shame!

^^^Bean Counters^^^ Bar stock receiver bolt guns must make some easy profit.

It's easy to complain about "Bean Counters", but companies that don't listen to them and continue to make goods that are too expensive to sell at a profit are soon out of business. Sad as it may be, it's better to drop a line of goods than run the entire company into extiction.

Yep, everyone hates the evil bean counter.

Until it's time for them to collect their pay check.

What? No paycheck because management didn't listen to the bean counters?

Yeah... :p

If it were just up to "Bean Counters" all we'd have would be, Glocks, Savage 110's and Mossberg 500's. And we'd be driving 4 cylinder Camrys.;)

Look, I like my Savage 99 in 300 Savage. It's a classic gun.

But the trigger is ugly and can't be fixed. It's designed like that.

I don't (yet?) have a BLR but would like one. Preferably in 358. Hog gun or something.

I have a BLR in 308. I picked it up in 1984. It's an early one with the dished receiver sides. I don't know how many deer it's harvested, but it is a great shooter. It shot good with factory ammo, but my handloads with 150g Nosler Partitions are extremely accurate. I had a scope on it for one deer season and then I took it off because it ruined the balance of the gun. I never shot a deer farther than 50 yards away with it anyway.

I refinished the wood with a tung oil long ago as the stuff that was on there was chipped and just didn't look good. It was tough to get the old finish off, but the results were worth it.

Adjusting Savage 99 trigger

Again, it's not too difficult to adjust the Savage 99's trigger. But, you must know what you're doing and be very careful. Then make sure you haven't created an unsafe condition by testing it several times without live ammo. You might try calling the experts at Brownell's to get their opinion. Many gunsmiths won't touch a factory trigger because of liability issues. As always, NEVER, EVER point the muzzle in an unsafe direction.

Savage 99

I have a Savage 99. I am trying to establish build date
Marked on lever post in oval J 61, was this 1958?
Serial # 675XXX, rotary magazine, .300 savage
Side mount scope, not drilled on top front.
Lever safety.
Did 99's have stocks/forends shaped differently even though they might have been built in later years?
