Savage 99 in 300 Savage

Saw a very nice example for sale at the local GS, need another rifle like I need a hole in the head but the price is very reasonable so I'm thinking of offering a trade. How about some feedback from some owners of said specimen. Might just help to push me over the edge. Has a nice Lyman aperture on it as well.

I think the 300 savage is pretty much 308 ballistics. If you cast for your rifles the case has a pretty short neck. The sight sounds nice. Is the safety on the tang or lever, how much cash do they want?

300 Savage

Just sold/ traded 2 99s, 300 TD and 303 TD, both old model. Kept Lyman sight
off 303, worth $100 if in good shape. 300 had some honest carry wear, let go
$500. 303 was cherry went $650. Have hunted and loaded 300Savage. I like
it, very close to 308. Still have Rem-81 in 300 Savage one of my favorite old
deer rifles. Short neck on 300 never was problem for me. Shot a lot of mil 150
FMJs out of both guns for cheap fun shooting.

They're great rifles and not getting cheaper. Mine (99F - 1941) is very accurate. Reloads are no problem. If the price is south of $600, get it.

Best littl lever carry rifle in the woods (having a crummy trigger pull.)_:D
Fun to reload. (Can be a truly PITB to reload until you catch on.)
S/S's advice:
You're the one envied. Never the one envying. When it comes to the ownership of a lever 300 Savage._:)

You can still find loaded ammo

Kinda niche market, but quite similar in performance to .308

I have Remington 81 auto loader in .300 Savage. Heavy as all get out but puts bullets where I want them.

A Classic

I think that anyone who has dealt with firearms will one day regret selling one or more. Yes, this is one that keeps haunting me. Mine was an older one with the Schnabel forend and brass rotary mag. Took three Alabama deer the first year I hunted with it. As lever actions go, this one is a classic. I don't know about the vintage of yours but I sure wish I had mine back..... :(

Go for it and;
Be Safe !!!

My favorite rifle, and my favorite cartridge.

My 99 is an EG from 1936. I also have a Remington 81 and a Remington 722, both in .300 Savage.

The 99 was offered in more standard chamberings over its life than any other lever action rifle.

There was an earlier negative remark about the trigger. Mine breaks crisp at 4 1/2 pounds. Nothing like the horrible trigger on the Winchester model 88. Took my first four elk and several deer with the 300 Savage. Also have my dad's. Some people don't like the older models with the safety on the lever. Even though I am left handed, it was no problem to use once I got use to it.

I have a model 99 in 300 savage that was my grandfathers then my fathers and now mine. I love it. Some day it will be my son's and hopefully his son's. Great rifle and very accurate. I reload for it with no problems at all.

I've killed more Missouri deer with a Savage 99 in 300 Savage caliber then any other rifle I've owned.
Most of those deer were running shots, to me the Savage 99 made them easy shots, it's the most natural swinging rifle I've ever used.
If you feel you are getting the rifle at a price that works for you, I say jump on it.

The 300 Savage is nearly identical to the 308 Winchester in performance. Ammo is readily available and easy to reload.

I think the 99 to be a very elegant looking rifle. Looks futuristic now and must have been really something startling to shooters around 1900.

When a friend picked one up a couple years ago it pushed me over the edge and I looked for one. Wound up with a real oldie. The 303 Savage isn't as powerful as the 300 Savage and ammo is tough to find but I load my own and I don't need every last drop of energy. IMO a classy looking rifle.

Brutus,

The 99 Savage rifle is a superb rifle. They made a million 99's, twice as many as the oft referred to pre-64 m70. The 99's also have control round feeding!

I got my first 99 in 1966 and made it my primary woods rifle. At that time I had acquired the 'camp' in VT and I got my deer with that 99. All of my 99's are 358 Win Featherweights.

That Savage in .300 would made an excellent all around rifle. I prefer the 99's with tang safeties and being drilled and tapped for a rifle scope.

Unfortunately this isn't true. Velocities of the 300 Savage with a 150 grn. bullet fall short of the .308 by about 180fps, about the same amount it's faster than the 150grn 30 WCF (30-30). I handload for both and the .308 with it's bigger case is always faster.

It is an elegant and revolutionary rifle for it's time, especially considering that it was developed only 5 years after the Winchester 94. My 1949 Model 99 in 300 Savage is a beauty, however, I give the nod to my 1959 Win 88 in .308 in looks. Yes, the 88 was developed some 55 years later but taking cues from the model 70, Winchester nailed it.

Savage99:

Here you are talking about Savage 99's and you appear to be a collector of something even more awesome.

I might have to accuse you of having good taste.

My 1951 Model 99 shoots just like mehavey's with 165 grn Speer Grand Slams and IMR-3031 @ 2600 fps. Which is only 97 fps slower than a 308 with the same powder. :D Oh Well !
