I decided to buy this particular Savage rifle package just so I could had a solid "do all" hunting rifle. I decided on .308 based on many reasons, but mostly for easy access to both high quality and cheap ammo types.
I love how this gun has zero parts that I have to really worry about in bad weather conditions. It's also nice and light weight. Groups are very good with good ammo ( I honestly can't claim to know the accuracy potential because I'm not much better than a 1 MOA shooter. It can shoot 1 MOA with many loads.) The scope is actually pretty decent for an included scope. It's certainly not as nice as other scopes I have owned, but those scopes were also upwards of $400 without rings. This one is plenty sufficient for most hunting purposes and will only lag in usable time by 5 or 10 minutes of sunlight at dawn and dusk at most. I see no need to upgrade, but may do so just because I like higher zoom and side focus scopes.
The accutrigger is really nice. I don't like triggers that have more than one piece typically ( looking at you Glock), but this one is very light and crisp when adjusted as mine is. I use the safety insert as sort of a 2 stage trigger.
Speaking of safety, I like the Savage safety system best. It's a good 3 position safety that is in the most sensible location for me.
The bolt isn't what I would call silky smooth, but I didn't expect it to be. It's perfectly functional and that's all I cared about. If you want a rifle that feels like a million bucks than this isn't it and it isn't priced like it either ( I paid $600 for the package)
Here's my big GRIPE about this rifle and Savage in general. They make a perfectly functional rifle that is everything you want it to be and then they go cheap on the magazine system. WHY?????? I had a much more expensive model with the "nicer" mags and still found it to be a really unimpressive part of the rifle. Savage, you should be embarassed! What would it cost to have a system with positive lock up every time? Honestly? My AR's have always been good with that. Every single one of my pistols has always figured that out. Even my cheap rimfire rifles have decent magazines with solid retention systems. What makes you think that no one cares about this? What makes you think that we wouldn't HAPPILY pay the extra 5-10 dollars it would take for you to manufacture a solid solution here? Fix it! It is the only thing that is holding you back from being an EXCELLENT value rifle instead of simply a decent value rifle. I've been embarrassed more than once at the range to have the mag simply pop out while shooting and God forbid it ever cost me a deer. Can I fix it? Yeah, but I shouldn't have to. Okay, enough about that and enough rhetorical questions.
The stock isn't one that evokes pride, but it doesn't really hold you back and is lightweight. The butt padd has a nice thick chunk of soft rubber that saves your shoulder on those long days of putting a bunch of rounds downrange.
Overall, I think this is a good deal and I am happy with this rifle. Minus the one major complaint, I have no qualms about recommending one to anyone looking at it.
