Savage 110 6.5mm build

My 6.5-06 is 1-8" 24" airguaged premium Douglas #3 contour, it put those 125 grain Partitions into a cloverleaf. It also take those 140 grain (anything) and shoot them well, but being a Turk it has to be seated off the lands to get it to magazine feed, being cfr, my next build is the Creedmore, plenty of jam there in turk mauser action.

When you say "older"- I'm going to assume you mean staggered-feed magazine as opposed to the newer centerfeed.

Posted about it here before, Criterion has a proprietary .260 chambering- .260 "Match", which has additional freebore over the SAAMI .260 specifically to be able to seat-out heavy VLD's.

I have one, and while I can get special mags for the AICS to gain a little more mag room- it still wouldn't be quite enough, so it's usually single-load.

Thinking this would be an ideal candidate for a long-action build, no mag length issues.

Stocks (at least, more inexpensive ones) are more available for the blind mag Savages typically, but you didn't specify if you have a blind mag, or hinged floorplate. Stocky's looks like they have one or two of the B&C's in stock that will fit the LA, staggered feed, blind mag:

I built my 6.5-06 off my old flat back Savage 110 action that was my long range 300 WM for many years. I swapped the bolt heads/firing pin/magazine box and follower over to an 30/06. I ordered my barrel from McGowen,a 26" Shilen 5.5 contour matte finish SS. Installed the barrel with a .250" ground recoil lug and a new trued barrel nut, then installed a Sharp Shooter Competition trigger set at 2 lbs.
The stock is a Boyd's LH thumbhole (Center feed)that I ordered unfinished,I inlet the barrel channel, enlarged the mag well to fit my Staggered feed action blind mag box. I then shaped the outside of the stock to my liking and put 10 coats of hand rubbed Tung oil on the stock.

It don't shoot too shabby either!
I loaded the Hornady 140 gr BTHP Match bullets just to break in the barrel, and it liked this load.Too bad,I wasn't as good as the rifle.

I finally found a couple boxes of the discontinued Sierra 160 gr Pro Hunter bullets and worked up a load. It's only 3 shots, but I only have 200 of these bullets so they need to last a few years.
I'll hunt with these this year.

I use a set of Redding S type Bushing dies, and use 270 Winchester brass for my 6.5-06. Since I shoot a 25/06 and 30/06,I didn't want to take a chance on mixing up brass with the same head stamp. I use a Redding Body die for resizing the neck and a RCBS trim die to trim the necks off the 270 brass. It's a simple process with a Lee 25/06 Case Trimmer chucked up in a cordless drill.

Some of the older Savage 110's have the mag well cut to the length that matches the cartridge they were chambered for (ie 110 long action in 308w). I would make sure of what I had before choosing a cartridge.

Jim Briggs at Northland is a great guy to deal with for savage parts.

Timney trigger is great compared to older stock savage but it will always be a savage trigger / sear design...

If you do go with the swede, put some thought into what brass you'll be using. Norma is good brass and easy to find, but the head dia is larger than standard 308 family cases.

The old factory savage tupperware storks can be pillared, glassed but will still have a tone of flex in the forearm.
