Safety of pocket carry

Most of this thread consists of nonsense and paranoia, with a massive dose of inexperience thrown in. A properly-holstered, double action only or de-cocker firearm, or really any quality firearm in a holster, in a pants pocket, or deep coat pocket, or horizontal holster, as PT-92 so acutely observed, is not going to fire itself. They are safe no matter where they are pointed. The reality concept behind the axiom about pointing a weapon is for weapons held in the hand, ready to fire. Anyone who has carried firearms on a regular basis knows better.

Many of the modern pistols without safeties are not safe without holsters. I personally think they are not necessarily all that safe with holsters in many cases unless the user is well-drilled and experienced.

But this thread has carried the concept of a safety rule to the point of the ridiculous.

Teuthis- EXACTLY! I couldn't agree more.
Reading a few of the posts in this thread made me reread them several times over just to understand how far out there they were.

Any safely holstered handgun in perfect working order with the trigger covered is safe to carry no matter where it points.

To many peoples surprise i carry a Sig p238 cocked and locked in my back pocket correctly holstered.Im 6'4" and 260lbs on a good day.
At first i was skeptical my fat behind would tweak the frame and have an AD,but once i became more familiar with it internally and how 1911's work there is no way possible this gun can fire unless i release the safety and pull the trigger.

I also carry a PPS in the same back pocket, but with a half holster cover that hides the top and protects the trigger from outside objects.Basically the pocket its self is the holster, and just added protection from the outside.
This is the one situation i find it safe as the gun fills the pocket and nothing else but my hand will go in it and the gun cannot shift or move.

From the tone of this thread id be seen as a careless maniac until Teuthis spoke up.

No, there are others. Read the first few responders including myself above.

You sir are correct,my apologies.Ill admit some threads i miss posts or skip a page on long threads.
Too bad i missed reading yours as it makes alot of sense, and i agree with you 100%.

Ill never skip on safety when it comes to guns tho.
Ive got a longish story about me trying to change my 13 year old daughters view's on guns, and i think my way in will be with Airsoft guns as she doesn't fear those and even asked about getting one.Well i went and bought one and im waiting for her next weekend visit and i can teach her gun safety and how to shoot.Hopefully she will look at real guns without fear and want to proceed further.
Ive been divorced from her mom 10 years and ive been away from guns for 20 years out of lack of interest, but not im back into them and the lost time with her i wasn't able to instill my beliefs like i would have liked over the years.
But im trying,and trying patiently.

If a gun is in a proper holster, and your hand isn't on it, I'm not worried about it discharging and I don't feel it violates safe gun handling.

***, I carry a 642 in my pocket, no holster, how the heck is it gonna go off without someone pulling the trigger. I wear jeans and I can't fantium a situation where my gun can fall out of my pocket.

You people can WHAT IF any thing and worry yourself to death.

Going to the source

If you hit the link at the top of this page that says "Firearms Safety," you will be taken to Jeff Cooper's Rules of Gun Safety. This is the set of rules which contains the rule referred to in the OP's question. It is RULE II: NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO DESTROY. The third sentence in that rule directly addresses this question:
A firearm holstered properly, lying on a table, or placed in a scabbard is of no danger to anyone. Only when handled is there a need for concern.
Thus the originator and champion of the particular iteration of the rule in question argues against the absolute prohibition against ever letting the muzzle cover something you would not want to destroy. As some here correctly discerned, he was speaking specifically about those times when the gun is being handled.

I agree with the last part, but it wouldn't be too hard for something to catch on your pocket and your momentum of moving away catch the trigger and fire it.This is why i have to use a holster even with pocket carry.
Granted its a small chance of happening, but it is still a chance.

But then again people who clip carry guns have far many higher risks imo.
People talk about their mags getting accidentally released while pocket carrying if they bump something just right,it can do it with a trigger also.
Granted a heavy pull revolver or Keltec longer heavy pull is much safer than a Glock carried by a clip.

When I carry a pocket pistol I carry a 5 shot S&W 2 inch with a bobbed hammer spur and a DA trigger job.

I carry it in my strong side front pants pocket without a holster and have never had a problem with weapons retention, and can get the weapon into service quickly and with no warning, which is the primary mission of a hide out.

LOL I'm old and lazy anymore, I doubt I move fast enough for something to catch on my trigger and pull the trigger.

In reality, I have as much of a chance of lightning hitting me, burning through my pocket and hitting a prime.

How about all those barrels pointed at you from under the counter at the gun shop? Never know when one might be loaded!

Besides, whats the point of CC if your adjusting your gun so much? Everyone will notice your fidgiting

I pocket carry a revolver with a 14# trigger pull so I'm not worried about an AD...If I had a Glock in my pocket, I would be concerned about being taken out of the gene pool the hard way.

Lately been carrying a small 5 shot mini revolver, single action in a pocket holster or a larger version of the same gun with 4" barrel or both. Used to carry a unchambered Kel-tec P11, long before the Plaxico incident. Poor guy got the book thrown at him because he was rich , famous and black.Pretty sure the police chief who did the same thing had no charges filed against him or get sentenced to prison.

Cocked and locked semi-autos have always made me uneasy about carrying them. I value my jewels . LOL. I carry DAO revo's to ease my worry.;) The mini in the pocket (single action) works to
