Sad story, tragic accident

Maybe this is germane:

I used to race and believed that if I had the means to send my kids to one of the racing schools like Skip Barber or Bob Bondurant, their chances of survival on the street would be increased because they would know more about car handling, evasive driving and skillful manuvering. Then I came across some statistics complied by insurance companies that surprised me. Insurers tracked the driving record of teenagers who attended performance driving schools...and discovered they had a higher accident rate than others! Turns out the kids wanted to exercise their newfound skills and put themselves in peril more frequently than the average driver. They had increased their skills...but not their judgement. Maybe it is not in a teenager's chemical composition to be able to weigh the outcome against showing off to peers.

Colombe,

Yes. There is absolutely no way to insure that something bad does not happen. And just as you have said, I don't want the government dictating to me just how I am supposed to prevent those accidents.

I personally believe that education is the best method for reducing accidents, not legislation.

Education places the responsibility for safe behaviour upon the one that is educated, thus "passing the torch" to the next generation.

Legislation makes it the responsibility of the government, thusly bringing its constituants under it's "ever-loving wings."
Plus, when someone else is going to "do it for you" (the government) our character is reduced and we become less than what we could/should be.

Freedom is a work in progress that requires constant up-keep. Tiresome, but extremely rewarding.
