Sacrilege?

So how sacrilegious would it be of me to take an older Ruger Single Six revolver chambered in .22wmr and cut the barrel down to 2" for my wife to carry as a CCW?

Thoughts? Other suggestions? I'd have a gunsmith do it and re-crown it and put a new blade sight on it (is that necessary?) obviously but just wondering what tFL population thinks of this...

I don't think sacrilegious is the word! But I don't want to make an insulting comment!

Single action 22Mag CCW? Too many other intelligent choices.

It's your gun; if you don't modify in such a way as to make it dangerous it is your own bidness.:D

I would not use a SA revolver for a defensive weapon unless that was my only option.

Would that be cost effective? You can always get a NAA Mini or Charter Pathfinder in .22 magnum for less than a ton of money.

Is this an old three screw model? If she really likes the Single Six you should be able to find someone to trade a newer one for it. Then you can hack up the new gun without losing any sleep over it. Plus the transfer bar will allow her to carry it fully loaded.

Or, if all else fails, do whatever you want with your gun.

Sacrilegious ?? Amen to that !!!

cut the barrel down to 2"
Well as others have replied and will reply, not really that good of an idea. Have you taken into account that you will also have to cut down the extractor tube, spring and rod? Then Re-install the front sight. Do you really have enough room. I know fella that cut down a Buntline to a standard length and he did a fairly good job but this "may" be a bit extreme. I know it's your call all the way but I have a soft spot in my heart for this little guys. .... :(

You goal may be best served by going in a different direction. .... ;)
What about a Bersa .22 Thunder?

Be Safe !!!

Some people criticize Taurus, but the 8 shot, double action, Ultra-Lite 941 .22 Magnum (pictured below), would be a much better choice than what you are suggesting.

I agree with Nate. I'm biased since I'm a Taurus man myself. That is a nice gun and to me a way better option than cutting and pasting.

I'd have a gunsmith do it and re-crown it and put a new blade sight on it
As mentioned on a previous post, also the ejection rod, spring, and tube. All this work will cost you nearly, if not the same as the Taurus above. Also, is your wife absolutely set on a 22 Magnum? Better choices for CCW in the caliber department as well.
In looking at your username, I notice you are in Wisconsin. Newly enacted CCW laws. Are you just looking at something you have around that you can "make do" with?

I just had an idea!!! Although it's against my #1 rule, I'll make an exception in this case.
I'll trade you my Heritage Rough Rider 6" 22/22Mag convertible for your Single Six! I'll even throw in a hack saw!!!

I can hardly thing of a more usless cc gun. Better than nothing, but to actually plan on using this gun for that purpose borders on the absurd. It's not a collectors item by any means but it sure would end up being a bad choice to bet your life on.

It was just a thought. My wife loves shooting my single six (no not an old three screw) and was wondering what could be done so she could carry it or something like it for warm weather and/or skimpy outfit cc.

As of currently she already had a Ruger LCP for light carry and a Bersa UC .45 for cool/cold weather carry. She was just looking for an alternative in a revolver that had little recoil.

I thought about it and converting a single six to short barrel would take too much work and cost too much. Honestly I am seriously leaning toward the Taurus .22mag revolver.

This isn't a "make do"sort of thing. We have been preparing for CCW to come to WI for years. We have been carrying our preferred guns around the house in prep for this since 2001. I have my favorite 1911 and a Bersa UC 45 as my EDC guns. I have already listed my wife's guns for EDC.

Thanks for the replies. Honestly I never really wanted to cut up my Single Six.

As already stated . . . it's your gun . . . . but . . . as already stated . . you'd have to modify the ejector rod/assembly as well.

I know there are some out there who carry SA for SD . . and like you wanting to modify your SingleSix, that is their option as well.

I've shot SA revolvers all of my life . . I love 'em. . . . for target shooting and plinking. However, for SD, I wouldn't even consider it - for myself. In a SD situation, there is enough going on without having to remember to cock each time . . plus that slows down your ability to get additional rounds off fast if needed.

I CC a Ruger LCR - if I ever have to use it, all I have to remember is to aim and pull the trigger . . . if I'm not too busy soiling my britches Other times, I CC a Ruger SR9 . . . all depends on where I'm going and how I'm dressing.

As suggested, I'd have her look at some of the smaller pocket revolvers in DA if she wants a revolver . . if she isn't set on a revolver, i'd also take a look at some of the smaller .380 pocket pistols.

I'll throw in a positive comment and then leave it to the naysayers.

A Single Six makes a fine Sheriff's model. You can certainly do a lot worse and I believe the world is a better place with more custom Single Sixes than without. No, it's not ideal but if a single action is what you're most comfortable and proficient with, then it is a good choice. I shoot single actions almost daily. My single action shooting far outnumbers any other action type. So I am more comfortable with a sixgun than anything else and consider it a viable choice for self defense. IMHO, a cool head and weapon proficiency vastly outweighs your particular choice in weaponry.

It's not terribly expensive to shorten a barrel or an ejector and housing. The work can be done for less than $200 with a nice dovetail front sight. I don't know of any $200 guns worth having, let alone betting my life on. Throw in an action job, freewheel and some finish work and you've got a nice little custom Ruger. Personally, I would GREATLY prefer to have a custom Single Six over any Taurus ever made at any time. I'll take one fine custom over a good factory gun and a cheap factory gun any day of the week. Most wouldn't agree and that is fine.

Actually Weblymkv posted something that I found interesting. I might have to investigate that further (as in go find one and shoot it).

After my personal experiences with Taurus' CS and QC I'm not about to buy another Taurus any time in the foreseeable future.

If her heart is set on a SA .22mag, why not get a Bearcat and have it reamed to. 22mag? Makes for a lighter, handier package than the Single-Six....

How about she pick up a 38 any find some powder puff loads?

I don't want to get shot with a 22, but a slightly poor hit will have the bg sluffing it off and make him mad. A 38 would be significantly more noticeable.

38 +P would actually be a deterrent, if she decided to protect herself.
