S&W Model 19 & Model 686

Alot of good information and varying opinions. I love the model 19 but I love to shoot magnums and thats why I was considering the swap, because of the potential of the forcing cone failures with the 19, I don't take it to the range often or CCW using target 38's with it. I may just look for a 686 snub and let the 19 rest.

You're only likely to have problems with your M19 if you feed it a steady diet of full-power .357 Magnum ammo loaded with lightweight (<140gr) bullets. If you restrict its diet to .38 Special ammo or .357 Magnum ammo loaded with heavier bullets, you'll probably be passing the gun on to your children and grandchildren.

The best explanation of K-Frame forcing cone issues I've ever found can be read here:

Although I have told you to make the trade if you want, however, if you are trading your snub 19 for a 686 snub, I probably would not do it. The reason being, I would always rather have a 19 snub as opposed to a 686 snub for the sheer fact the 19 makes for a better snub nose gun.:D

With that being said, if you still want to make the trade, do it. They are both fine weapons. I might suggest you keep the 19 and save up for a snub 686. It will be much easier to find a snub 686 than it will be to find another snub 19.

If someone wanted to trade me a 686 for a 19/66, they better be prepared to kick in some serious "boot."

Even then I don't think I'd make the trade. I never have cared for the 686. Nothing wrong with it, I just never wanted one.

I knew I guy once. He wanted to do a trade. Apparently he thought some firearms examiner might be looking for the barrel to match the bullets(s) recovered at a local crime scene. Imagine that.
I knew a guy who spent a lot of time watching "CSI" and "NCIS". Might be the same guy.

Yep. :)

I see 20 and 30 year old cold cases being solved all the time because technology has caught up with crime-fighting. The perps whom get caught have lots of time to watch T.V. then.

The 'creep-to creep' price for stolen guns is 50% less if the gun is question was used at a prior shooting. That is if you roll around the gutter with creeps on a regular basis...otherwise how would you know such things? Sorry I don't have a report on this up to the minute intel. It is amazing what you can learn from watching television.
