S&W Model 19 & Model 686

I am looking for some information. I have a S&W Model 19-5, 2 1/2 bbl, nickel, excellent condition and wanted to know as far as trading it for a Model 686, 2 1/2 bbl, stainless. Would it be an even trade or need something from one or the other to make it even? Looking for opinions or advice. Thanks

Depends on the day and the buyer or trader, and the condition and amenities with the two guns.

I'd say in general the 686 would command about $100-150 more than a 19-5 in nickel.

Yeah, I may have been a bit high with that estimate. I was taking into account that the 19-5 does not have the pinned barrel and recessed cylinder of the 19-4, which is more sought-after by collectors, and that nickel finishes appeal to a smaller number of shooters than blue.

Depends on whether you have the factory grips and original box, tools, and paperwork, which can bump the price a bit for collectors or people interested in reselling later.

Also depends on what model of the 686 it is. Pre-lock is more desirable than the current guns (by some buyers).

The 19 has scarcity going for it - they aren't making them anymore. But the new 686s are rather expensive, so that keeps the price of used ones high too.

So I would think that your 19 would sell for between 500 and 650, and a good 686 would sell for between 550 and 750.

That's based on what I've seen on Gunbroker, which may not be a fair representation of your local market.

I would actually give a slight edge in value to the M19. While the shorter 2 1/2" barrels typically bring a premium on both models, the nickel finish on the M19 is also less common than blue finish while the 686 only ever came with one finish (or rather lack thereof). Also, K-Frame Magnums, particularly snubs, have been climbing more rapidly in price than L-Frames ever since the M66 was discontinued in 2005.

About even trade around here also. Though personally I would keep the model 19, IMHO they looks better than the 686's do.

Locally the 19 would bring $50 to $75 more than a pre lock 686 snub.

Having examples of both, I would never trade a model 19 snub for a 686 snub. The 19 carrys better, conceals easier, points more naturally and looks better than any 686 snub I own or have owned.

Good luck with your decision! Regards 18DAI

In my area ...the model 19 in Nickel is worth a little more than a model 686...like someone else said, in identical condition....but the 2 values are within
$ 50 of eachother probably..../ although personally, I like both models ...and have some of each in my collection ...I like the model 19's over the 686's...a little...

but they're very similar in terms of value in my view...

If you want the 686 and he wants 19, just make the trade without any money involved. It would keep things much simpler.

Keep the 19. Not that the trigger pull is bad on the 686, but it will be nowhere near as good as your 19 without a little work.

Why would you want to trade away an M-19 2 1/2"? The M-19/66's are considered to be one of the best if not the best combat revolver ever produced.

Remember they are not making any more M-19's, and S&W is producing scads of M-686's.

If you want the 686, get it. Don't let everyone say how much better the 19/66 is. While it is indeed a fine fine gun, the 586/686 are just as good. The 19/66 have some aspects that make them better than the 586/686, and the 586/686 have features that make them better than the 19/66. Pick which one you want, and do not look back.

I knew I guy once. He wanted to do a trade. Apparently he thought some firearms examiner might be looking for the barrel to match the bullets(s) recovered at a local crime scene. Imagine that.

Sale..No. Trade.....No. All together now, Nnnooooo.

I had to have both. But, I'm OCD when it comes to K frame 357s.

In a 2 1/2 inch I think I would like the 19 better.

My 4" L frame is a work horse and I do like to shoot it.

In my limited search for a 19-3 in great condition vs. a 586/686, I think the 586/686 always commanded $50 - $100. Personally, I saw the pinned and recessed 19-3 as the premium model. I might pay $25 more for the 586, if it mattered.
