S&W has discontinured 342/342PD -- Why??

Well, I'll be keeping my 340PD with its nasty never-used lock.
It really does carry noticeably lighter than my 642, and is easy to shoot with its favorite load (.38 Special Gold Dot 135gr+P JHP), and I'm surprised S&W discontinued it.

The 340PD is NOT discontinued, SAWBONES. It is the 342/342PD revolvers that were discontinued. The public was buying the 340's and not the 342's. The 340's offer the option of firing 357 Magnum, even if you only tote the .38+P's in them.

Tamara...432

I use the 642 as one of my guns for ccw.

Is the 432 a 32 caliber? If so, it seems you could find a smaller gun to handle the 32 round. Kel-Tec...Seecamp, etc.

What is the advantage of the 32 in a J-Frame?

Just curious...if there is an advantage, I want one.

I carry a 342 for back up and off duty and and found it to be a fine wheel gun.
I am small framed and the 342 conceals rather nicely.

432 give you an extra round - I guess that's an advantage.

At the gun show today, I saw a new 642 for $310 (I got mine for $309 several years ago). The Sc guns where about $550 t0 600. That's money for me!

denfoote: The 637 is very light - with a lot of recoil. Also the spacing between the trigger-guard & the grip seems a little "different" to me for this model. I got rid of mine because my middle finger was getting banged-up.

I have a old nickel 442 that suits me fine.

Yes, the 431/432 are .32 caliber, but they are .32 H&R Magnum. .32 H&R is a far, far cry from the anemic .32 acp. The .32 H&R offers performance similar to standard pressure .38 special, which is a proven reliable round, in my opinion.

Georgia Arms supposedly make a very hot 100 gr loading for the .32 H&R that I have yet to try. I have been shooting and carrying Federal's 85gr Personal Defense round, and have had the chance to try it on animals ranging from coons to coyotes, and have found it quite effective.

Thanks for the info.

You say it is similar to the standard pressure of the .38 special, which is a proven round, but how is it more effective than the .38 round?

What is the advantage of the .32 H&R Magnum over the .38 special?

Is there less recoil...does the revolver hold more rounds...is the .32 more accurate than the .38...from your statement, it is obviously not more powerful...just trying to understand why I would want to switch to the .32?

Thanks again.

There is considerably less recoil, and the gun does hold one more round. The six rounds in a J-frame is what sold me on the gun. This is the only real advantage over the normal .38 cal J-frame, IMO.
