S&W 686

I live in SC, own three guns, a Glock 27, a Ruger LC9, and my first gun, a S&W 686P. My Smith is my favorite gun, my nightstand gun, and at heart I am a revolver guy true and true. However, it's much too big to carry, and lately I've thought about possibly selling it and getting a Ruger LCR as a carry revoler instead. I want to hear some GREAT reasons why not to just buy the LCR later AND keep my Smith instead of trading it so I don't make a big mistake and feel bad bout it later. Still it is tempting, I can't lie. I got the bug, what can I say. :D

My favorite gun is also my 686. However, it doesn't stay in the night stand. It gets shot a LOT. If I were looking to just have a night stand gun the 686 wouldn't be my first choice. If you want something else in a bad way, sell the 686 and get it. You won't have any trouble getting rid of the 686 to do it.

Never get rid of your first gun, especially if it's a nice one, which the 686 is.
Save your money and buy the LCR.

You WILL regret selling the 686....keep it. Save your pennies and get the LCR later. You can carry the the LC9 until you get it. Medium and large frame revolvers are much too fun to shoot at the range to get rid of them!!

Another vote to KEEP YOUR 686!!!! My pre-lock 686 Plus is my grail gun and I would never ever imagine parting with it...

Just save up for the LCR or why not a S&W 642? Makes a great buddy to the 686...

NO!!! I'll tell you from experience, I soldy 686 and have regretted it ever since. It was a 686 no dash, I loved that gun. My wallet was stolen two weeks before CHRISmas with my whole paycheck in it. We had a lot of stuff for the kids already and I needed the money real bad. Just save $25.00 a week and in 3 months, you'll have your LCP and your 686.

You should never get rid of a gun that you really like. I own a few guns that I don't have specific purposes for, and there's nothing wrong with that. I love shooting all of them, even if they don't get carried or don't get to sit out on night stand. Then again, I see myself as more of a collector, and I love just owning different examples of various handguns.

I'm actually about to pull the trigger on a 686 myself. My collection is lacking a nice medium frame 4" duty type revolver, and the 686 has been calling my name. I might wait until the gunshow this weekend to see if there are any deals to be had, but I doubt it.

I never sell or trade a gun, I have a 686 and it is one of my favorites. Sounds like you like it and it was your first, keep it and save up for your next one. ;)

+1 on don't sell it.

I love my 4" 686 plus. I have been thinking about picking up a smaller pocket size revolver in 38/357 also but no way would I part with my 686 for an LCR. As almost everyone else is saying.... I say just save up. It will come a lot quicker if you save up for an LCR than having to save up for another 686 if you decide you miss it and want another 686 most likely.

My Smith is my favorite gun, my nightstand gun, and at heart I am a revolver guy true and true.

These alone are good ones, but here are a few more:

1. Not every gun has to be carried.

2. Everyone needs a full-sized "range gun" with which to work on your fundamentals. Without solid fundamentals, how useful would your carry guns be?

3. You need a gun with some versatility, and a full-sized .357mag is about as versatile gun as it gets.

Get a temporary 2nd job, keep your Smith, and buy the Rugly in a month or two.

I got a 2nd job some 28 or 29 years ago just to buy a Walther PPKS .380. Then it was a HK 91, a Remington 870, Zeiss shooting glassed. ammo, relaoding supplies, tickets to the gun show, another Walter PPKS in .32acp....

NEVER,NEVER,ABSOLUTELY NEVER sell your first gun. You'll regret it later, but it will be gone.

My first gun was a Ruger MkIII 22/45. I regret starting on that gun and have never regretted selling it. My dislike of rugers started there, and was reinforced a couple of times with other guns.

I would not part with my 686+, but it is not the last gun I would sell if I hit financial difficulty. We all make hard decisions like this, and we all have our regrets. The good news is that 686s are very common, so replacing it later won't be too difficult.

Don't be too quick to decide that it is "too big to carry". With a good belt and holster it can be carried quite comfortably. I carry a 3 in. L frame S&W daily in an IWB rig. I am 5'11" and only 150 lbs. You will also need to buy your pants/jeans a little bigger to allow the rig to ride inside the waistband if you go with an IWB holster. With any type of belt other than one designed for CCW it won't work. I think people have become so accustomed to "little compact guns" they automatically rule out a midsized revolver. It can be done if the weight doesn't bother you.

I've got a 686 SSR. NO way! keep the 686. Use the LC9 as a carry or just buy the LCR. Mine stays in my nightstand AND gets shot.

Dont do it!

Carry the LC9. That is an awesome carry gun. Keep the 686. I love mine. Hits the gong at 100 yards and is my favorite gun to shoot. I have several nice guns, none as smooth as the 686.

Got mine for a bunch of cigars and some rifle ammo - best deal I've ever made. The guy didn't want it because he said he couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with it. I got it, and found the rear site was adjusted all the way to the left. I moved the site and have been hitting what I point it at since.

DO NOT SELL!!!

When did you get the LC9 ?

You've got two fairly small handguns in the G27 and LC9 they should be servicable for CCW until you can get something smaller.

I definately wouldn't part with the 686.

Steelers252006:

Keep your 686 and save your money then buy a Smith 442 or a 642. I own five Smiths. When I go to the range and open up my carring case and I see my revolvers I feel great at their sight. You have three guns already, a J frame Smith will give you four adding to a nice collection.
