S&w 586

Well don't have a urine test handy but it doesn't sound like your on crack :)

Said for years Smith and Wessons main competition is not Taurus, Colt or Ruger. It's the millions of excellent guns they made that are still floating around out there. Thank god we've got people who only buy new or those old guns might just go for more than the new ones...

Ala Dan: Thanks very much for the manufacturing date info..very much appreciated! :)

JOOC, would my gun have been sold NIB with the S&W logo'd Hogue Monogrips installed? That's what it had installed when I bought it, but would like to find some 'original' wood grips for my 586-4.

Thanks,
Mike

Another LNIB 586

Recently found a very nice S&W 586. SN AUD7xxx. Anybody want to hazard a guess on the date of this one? This one seems to have been protecting the inside of a safe or sock drawer -- it's very clean, 98% overall-100% blueing. Inside the barrel is pristine ... and it will soon be mine.

Mike,
Thanks. I was figuring early 80's, '87 is fine though. I've been holding out buying an L-frame for a long time, waiting for a 586. The 686 just didn't seem right, something about blue steel ...

edit: Not that it matters, but it ame with the original S&W wood grips. I'll probably get some nice rosewood or some gorgeous exotic.

Range Report

I finally got to the range with my new 586. What a great gun. Absolutely smooth both DA & SA. I had the range owner fire it to get his impression. He's an outstanding competitive shooter, ex LEO champion who has lots of L frame experience. He fired 6 rounds Win white box 130 gr FMJ at 10 yrds and there was one big hole it the center ring. He handed it back to me and said it was an excellent gun. Any negative comments on the following ammo?
Blazer 158 gr 38sp
UMC 158 gr LRN 38sp
Win White box 130 gr FMJ 38sp
Federal Am. Eagle 357

Also, what are your views on picking up a Lewis Lead Remover (Is the Hoppes just as good)

Thanks for all the imput.
Tom

I'm partial to UMC 125s in my 586 (For factory ammo.)
Good, cheap brass.
I'm usually shooting some blue dot concoction, though.

Excellent revolver

My good friend introduced me to the 686. Once I got to examine it I realized that it is superior to my Colt Python. The Smith is a better duty revolver. The Python is more of a "show" type weapon. I regret that I didn't purchase one sooner. My friend's 686 is 11 or 12 years old and better made than the new version that I got. Kind of a downer but it still does the job. To anyone who owns one, I recommend getting it glass beaded. It really adds to the beauty of it.
