S&w 36 0r colt detective ?

picked s&w 36

Well as some had advised I picked up a s&w 36 no dash ser number j490xxx gun came with factory box, paper work.Gun looks to be nickle plated but the more I clean it it could be stainless, are their any way to tell?Gun has no marks or scratches of any kind,I think ser number dates it to 1977 if so guy must have left it in safe.Double action trigger pull is a little heavy but single action is great.Let me know what you think, thanks walt

I have nuclear fallout quality sweat. In a concealed carry gun, I always prefer stainless. Colt never made a real Detective Special in stainless, so, a model 60 would be my choice. (Actually, a 642). But, sometimes I'll stick a Ruger SP101 in my waistband. Chunky, but controllable with magnums.

If it says 36 in the yoke cutout in the frame, its nickel plated.

I'm not sure what you mean by "..but the more I clean it it could be stainless"

If you are using a metal polish, stop. The rag will always turn black, that's nickel coming off.

It says 36,I am cleaning it with FLITZ anti corrosion protection really not polish.Gun may be a little to nice to carry.Do all 36 models have heavy trigger pull on Double action?

Not sure what "FLITZ anti corrosion" is. If its in a silver tube and its a blue paste, its quite abrasive. No matter what it says on the label.

Have carried a 36, 642 and DS. If I carry a revolver I prefer the 642 for weight difference in carry. But at times I will pull the DS out of the safe and carry it as posted I like the extra round, so I alternate.
