Rust on guns? Help!!!

I need some advice on how to keep my guns from rusting. Every single rifle of mine gets rust on it. Whether its kept in a case or leaning up against a wall. I have rifles that are blued, and some that have the parkerized finish on them. I've gotten to where I even wet them up with gun oil not once, but twice a week ( talk about time consuming) and they still get surface rust on them. Does anyone know a trick?

What is your location / climate / indoor humidity? Any ocean or salt air like in Florida?
Never store a rifle in a case. Some lubes prevent rust better than others. Research online for rust prevention products. You might be covering / hiding /masking the surface rust that has never been removed when you wipe them down with fresh oil. As the oil dries, it's still there. Try a light wipe using #0000 steel wool & oil. See if brown gathers on the wool.

I am in SW Alabama about 45 minutes from the Gulf of Mexico. Don't know what the humidity in the house is but they rust no matter what time of year it is. One of the guns that I'm referring to was purchased brand new 2 1/2 weeks ago

Purchase a hygrometer from Lowes or Home Depot. Probably about 10 bucks. This will tell you the humidity in your basement. If the humidity is high, which I suspect is the case then you will need to purchase a dehumidifier about 200 bucks and will increase your electic bill.

Immediately wipe down your guns with EEZOX or Break-Free CLP.

We don't have basements down here in south Alabama, atleast I've never seen one. I'm in a two story house and the guns are kept upstairs.

Ok. Still do the same thing. Without more details I would suspect humidity. A hygrometer will confirm the humidity and is relatively inexpensive. If the humidity is high, then a dehumidifier or air conditioner will remove it. You can also get some gun socks and wrap the guns up tight after you wipe down with eezox or clp. Wrap a rubber bad around the opening to seal it tight. Here is a picture of a gun sock.

Another option is a gun safe or cabinet with a dehumidifier (warming) rod and dessica packets or other removal options. Check midwayusa for gun safe accessories for recommendations.

I have noticed that my shotguns aren't rusting, and they are in gun socks.... However they are also in another room.

G96, is the answer, just spray a clean shop towel and wipe em down good. It'll get into that surface and make rust loosen and a thing of the past.;)

Are any of these chemicals available at say Walmart? Or will I have to order them online? I do have a bass pro about 20 minutes away but due to the traffic involved I'd probabally rather pay the extra money for shipping.

Gun sock's that have been oiled and squeezed out work great.
I once had that issue on a lease where I kept a coupe rifles.
I took the gun sock's and covered them with 5w motor oil and squeezed the oil out and let them hang a couple days and then placed my rifles in them.
Never had a rust issue again.
We were on that lease 4 years and never had to re-apply the oil.
All the wood was waxed with Johnson's floor wax and the motor oil never penetrated the wax.

I've found that in high humidity climates, its best to keep your gun wrapped in an oil cloth. An oil cloth is easy enough to make. Get some cotton sheets, wash them a couple of times and then dry them. You soak them in oil by putting oil on the cloth and spreading the oil out by wiping down the guns. Be sure to clean the guns first. I remove the firearm from its stock (or hand grips on pistols) Then I use an old wash rag soaked in Hoppes #9, scrub the metal, and rinse the metal with brakecleen. That usually breaks up the surface rust and then you can apply gun oil with the cloth and the put the stock back onto the rifle. Once it is assembled, wrap the firearm up in the oil cloth.

I appreciate the ideas guys, keep them coming. I remember my grandfather always telling me that oil makes things rust? When I clean the guns I scrub them pretty good. It is simply surface rust and hasn't gotten to pitting ( the new gun anyway) it wipes off easily. Today I saw a comparison on the Internet where someone put different chemicals on metal and let the metal sit outside for a few days. One of the " chemicals " was valvoline motor oil ( can't remember the weight) and it seemed to have the most rust on it after the experiment. I can't remember all of the products used but to my surprise wd 40 seemed to be 2nd best if not the 1st. I'm really thinking that moisture is getting into my gun room some how. My house isn't old, so I don't get it. I might caulk the windows.

The local gun shops around here in central PA. wipe their firearms with silicone.
Just some spray silicone in a rag, and wipe them down.

You might check there site to see if they carry eezox. If not try here if the link works.
Synthetic EEZOX Premium from -450F to 95F The Best!

Or you can find in better gun shops or eBay

Any other recommendations? I bought a cheap $5 gun sock at Walmart last night. The thing has a terrible strong chemical odor and is made in China. Maybe there Ida special chemical on it?

Just a thought

You MAY be oiling the guns too much. I know that sounds crazy but too much oil traps any moisture between the barrel and the oil film causing rust to form under the oil covering.

I've oiled them lightly and wiped all oil off and I have also tried leavings thin layer of oil on them... Regardless they still rust
