Rust...HELP

whoa that IS bad.

I would recommend a dehumidifier regardless if you move the guns or not.
A decent say 30quart+ model will work pretty well, most of that size and up can even be fitted with drain hoses.. im sure you got a drain in the basement by washer.

Let that puppy run 24/7.

probably set you back $150+ but the whole basement will benefit.

The basement is evidentially in a damp area , not much can be easily done.
The heating / cooling / dehumidifying and drains that need to be installed are expensive and disruptive.
My thought is get the guns out of the basement....they need a drier , well ventilated place . In the basement it will be a constant battle with rust....I live in South Louisiana...rust will eventually win....it wins every time.
Barricade is good as is good old school grease...RIG Gun Grease is a winner.
If you install a dehumidifier , connect it to a drain so the water is removed from the room. Having a dehumidifier drain into a bucket sitting in the room doesn't solve the problem...trust me on that one.

Don't over think this. A single 12" long Golden Rod should take care of the problem without doing anything else. I used a larger one to keep a piano and guitars dry for years.

to the basement in our utility room.

And just what ELSE is in the room??

Water heater? water piping?? washer? Dryer? anything like that and even powered de-humidifiers can be over powered. And that's not counting your area's natural ground water table.

I would put my kids in the basement before I put my guns (or any important metal things) in there.

#1, kids don't rust #2 they aren't in there 24/7

What I got from the test was that the top three were so close in corrosion resistance there was no need to break it down any further . I forget the number but the top three were still working after 150+ days or something like that . I personally bought the Hornady product https://www.amazon.com/Hornady-Shot...eywords=hornady+one+shot+cleaner+and+dry+lube Which is not the same stuff as there case lube

and the WD-40 product https://www.amazon.com/WD-40-300038...d=1501886530&sr=8-1&keywords=wd-40+specialist Which again is not the same as regular WD-40

I had been using two Stack-on gun cabinets to hold my firearms . I used a eva-dry dehumidifier https://www.amazon.com/Eva-dry-E-33...501886691&sr=1-3&keywords=evadry+dehumidifier
While always wiping them down with clp or Slip 2000 , corrosion X and that worked well for my but I live in a pretty dry area .

I just had a rather LARGE safe delivered a few days ago which included one of those plug in golden rod things . How well do they really work ? Can I just throw the guns in the safe and no longer worry about wiping them down even if I don't plan to use them for awhile ? Also does it need to be centered in the safe at the bottom or can I have it on one side or the other ?

I'm asking because I was wondering if those rods will work in a non insulated safe ? Mine is but those stack-on cabinets are just metal boxes with a loose fitting door and no insulation . I'm not sure they will keep that type of cabinet continuously at the correct temp ???

I used a larger one to keep a piano and guitars dry for years.

I might be wrong but my understanding was that those heating rods elevate the temperature of the area . This does not allow rust to form . How ever they do nothing to prevent moisture or very little so they would be a bad choice for trying to keep wood dry ?????????

I moved the cabinets in to my home office this weekend. I had them there when we first moved in and didn't have any problems so it should work for now.

I'll probably look to find another solution in the future.

Golden Rods heat the interior and drive moisture out. The elevated temp (above the ambient temp outside) keeps condensation from forming on metal with temp changes. Moisture is what rusts guns but salts and stuff on your hands could be a problem if you don't wipe the guns down first. The 12" Golden Rod is good for 48 cu ft. and a larger Golden Rod is needed if that one doesn't keep it dry. Mount horizontally on the bottom of the safe. Mine had holders. I think their wattages are 7W to 38W.
