Many CMP clubs around here hold service rifle clinics. For a very small fee, you'll spend the day learning about service rifle shooting. Positions. Working in the pits. Scoring. And they'll even loan you a CMP Garand and provide ammo.
Btw, I think you just need to fire 50 rounds in a high power competition. So it doesn't have to be a service rifle (M1, M1A, or AR15). You'd either need a magazine-fed semi-auto or a bolt action with stripper clip guides. Rifles need to have iron sights and can't have muzzle brakes.
