Russian Made AK?

SOG is advertising it as a Izhmash arsenal gun, does that mean that the Saigas are produced by the same folks? I'm trying to get smart on the AK thing as I want to order one of those SOG rifles.

So would the above pic

be something worth the $350? Or, should I stick with the $300 or so romanians?

Adventurer - all these conversions start with Saiga rifles. All the Saiga rifles (sold in the U.S.A., that I am aware of) are made at the Izhmash factory. Thus, all the Saiga conversions have the same receiver. Does this answer your question.

Goet - well....that's a hard one.

Both will have US made fire control components. If you like the synthetic furniture and brake from the factory, by all means get the SOG saiga. If you want an entry level rifle that looks like a traditional AK, then the Romanian, Egyptian or post ban Chinese bear more attention.

Either way you will end up with a shooter.

Of course, presumably, Russian fit-and-finish would be somewhat superior to Romanian.

I like my SAR-1. It's reliable. It is, however, rough and poorly finished and fitted. The wood is ugly and asymetrical.

If I had to do it over again, I'd probably get an Arsenal-USA (Polish-Hungarian), K-VAR (Bulgarian) or even Hesse (Russian Saiga conversion). Or shell out a little more and get a Vepr-2 (Russian RPK).

Okay, about this 'RUSSIAN IZHMASH ARSENAL AK-47': Does the slightly shorter barrel length cause for lower velocities when compared to a SAR-1? What about accuracy compared to a SAR-1? Overall, is this gun worth the money compared to a SAR-1? Just curious about opinions (and facts- of course!)

Thanks,

Well, would anybody recomend this 'RUSSIAN IZHMASH ARSENAL AK-47' from SOG over the SAR-1? Any 'bad news' or anything to look out for on this one?

Benjamin: Thanks!

I'm going rifle shopping tomorrow, and if I can't find a good option, then I'll backorder one of these guns from SOG.

I am curious to hear the answer to the accuracy/muzzle velocity questions though...

Yes, MV will be lower.
However, most AK barrels are only 16" anyhow - you're only losing 2".

About accuracy - I spend way too much time on gun BBSes. The Saigas have come up a few times on ak47.net - one poster says his is more accurate than a preban polytech - several say 'nothing special here'
Regardless, the AKM is not designed as a match rifle.

Gewehrmutter,

If the SOG guns are the converted Saigas are from Hesse I'd stay away from them. :barf: Unless you hear from someone who has one and is happy with it...

Otherwise(as posted before) go to AresenalUSA or KVAR. If you REALLY have a jones for an IZHMASH gun check out Marc Krebs at www.krebscustom.com . His conversions are superb.

Just my $0.02 ...
