Russia Plans AK-47 Ammo Factory In Cuba

Russia plans to build a factory in Cuba to make ammunition for AK-47 assault rifles, Federal Agency for Military and Technical Cooperation director Konstantin Biriulin said Thursday.

"The components were taken to Cuba a few years ago. Now, it is just a matter of taking them out of the crates and getting production underway," Biriulin said.

Well if they open up for tourism, I'm buying a boat. All the ammo, cigars, rum, and classic car parts I can import.

Don't the Russians use a different caliber now? AK74

I think there is an embargo on all products out of Cuba.....

Hopefully the factory will make more than just 7.62x39 ammo.

maybe we can sneak into Mexico and buy some....

but then Mexicans can't personally own guns... so, why would they sell ammo?

They can, it's just a mess and from what I understand, military calibers are not allowed, so they won't be buying any 7.62x39 or 5.45x39.

With the current political climate, we aren't going to be seeing any of that ammo on our shores anytime soon.

Cuba needs an infusion of hard currency, An ammo factory would do it.

It's a good start for an industrial expansion, the big question is whether or not they will allow importation to the US. I think not.

Walklightly yes AK74- 5.45x39
They finally came to the same conclusion the US did in Vietnam, more rounds = more kills.

7.62x39 is vastly superior to either 5.45 or 5.56. More rounds carried does not equal more kills. Many special forces carry the ak 47 because the bigger bullet is more lethal. Although 5.54 is better then the 5.56 due to its tendency to yaw as it strikes flesh.

jason_iowa, I hope you mean Russian special forces, because I don't know/ have never heard of any special forces that use them.
I'm pretty sure Russian special forces don't even use it.

Iowa - more rounds carried equals more kills. Im not talking about any spec ops etc and what they carry. Just your run of the mill 11 Bravo.

Spec ops may choose an AK47 to not announce Americans are there, sounds very different, don't want to leave American shell casings, also if you're going to be imbedded for a while best to only need local ammo which of course most likely would be 7.62x39

Kinda have to wonder what Cuba is planning once Castro is gone, maybe just a way to boost economy by selling to central and south American countries.

Interesting, as there are documented 7.62x39 rounds of Cuban origin from roughly 1969-88. No idea what happened to that factory, but might just be a re-equipping of an existing facility.

Jonnyc- cold war was pretty much over, no need for the Russians to have a cache near America. Maybe they converted it to a cigar shop

I wonder if the decision to build an ammo plant in Cuba has something to do with the fact Russian ammo is a big seller here in the USA.

Cuba will export ammo to every underground army and cartel they can get away with, and some legimate governments as well.

Pretty typical communist planning, though. They had the plant in crates for some years, and are just now getting around to thinking about opening them and setting up.

What and how many have you seen shot with either.

I've seen a heck of a lot of 5.56 & 7.62X39 bullet wounds and your statement doesn't hold up.

The 7.62X39 doesn't have the range of the 5.56, and it doesn't come close in the accuracy department.

The range & penetration problems of the 55 gr M193 was taken care of with the 62 + grn 5.56 bullets we have today. Even still, as range goes the M193 had the 7.62X39 beat.

There seems to be some reason you never see 7.62X39 rounds at rifle matches (excluding those fired on pistol ranges, even then they can't compare the 223s for accuracy).

I need some hard fast data to even consider your claims, because of what I've personally seen, it don't hold water.

Stop discouraging him. If wants to believe that the AK-47 is more lethal and carried by special forces why should we get in the way of his curious ideas? I do wonder how he carries more ammo than with an AR over an AK? Is it because the cartridge is smaller in diameter?

Canadians can own guns, and a lot more of them do own guns than many American gun enthusiasts believe. The Canadian government has far fewer reservations about trading with Cuba than the American government does; Canadian MPs don't have a strong anti-Castro lobby to worry about. Did I mention that the current Conservative government is a lot less anti-gun than other recent ones?

IMHO it's not difficult to see where much of this ammo will probably be sold. :) I'm curious to see if they'll start tooling up to produce .303 British. ;)

Sure they can; however just about everything that takes 7.62X39 is illegal.

I don't know where I got it but I had one round of 7.62x39 that was had "PMV" on the headstamp which is supposedly Cuban. I can't seem to find it now (honestly!).

There's a market for 7,62x39 in Mexico, with the Drug Gangs, and in Columbia, you remember them right-not our friends. If there is a new factory in Cuba it will not be to our benefit.
