I found one where a black Confederate was listed as a cook. He deserted and after several months his status was listed as private. You can't shoot a cook because a cook is a civilian (back then) but it was OK for the Confederates to shoot a private (even though blacks weren't allowed to be soldiers until near the end of the war).
 
The soldier I was researching raised race horses for a living and was an excellent horseman. It was said he could jump a five rail fence without flapping his shirttail but he walked for three days to enlist in the infantry. :confused::confused::confused:
