Rumsfeld stepping down!

Dubya has nominated Dr. Robert M. Gates as his successor. Dr. Gates is currently in charge of Texas A&M, has spent many years in the intelligence community serving every president back to Reagan (I think). We may have a winner here.

Thanks for nothing! If he had left at least two days ago the Senate would probably not be on the verge of flipping as well. Talk about closing the barn door after the horses have run off!

Some of the Bush choices have been less than stellar.

Understatement, to say the least. Rats? Sinking ships? Bush is on the radio admitting he lied about Rumsfeld staying.

badbob

regardless....if it is an improvement (big if), let's not worry about what Bush said, but that this may signal a real change.

...or not. The first complaint coming from the left (yes, I check) is that #1 he's a friend of Bush's family (not a valid reason for discarding him IMO) and #2 he knew about Iran-Contra and did not come forward.
The word from the right (yeah, them too) is that they're still in shock that Rummy's gone and they don't trust him because he's an 'Aggie'...

This story's still developing, so I'm not keen to go out on a limb. He wrote a couple books. Think it's time to study up on him....

Think it's time to study up on him....

I think it's time to wave a flag and dance with glee...I see this as an immediate improvement to the situation our friends downrange are in.

Eta: I just had a thought. This was obviously in the works for a while. So why was this done now? Why today? Why not a few days ago? What about the Dems taking congress made this happen today?

If I may answer a question that wasn't directed at me...
I think the feeling in the Bush administration was that dumping Rummy prior to the polls closing would have negatively affected the election as a sign of weakness. I think the proper time to do this was years ago, but they don't seem to be returning my calls :D

I think Mr. Gates will be a worthy choice for the job. He worked his way up from the bottom ranks of the CIA to the top job as Director.

That would have been a little over a week or two ago at the rate people people are getting killed over there, unless of course you meant American lives (As we if we'd ever care about any others).

A different take.

I think this signals Bush's willingness to cow-tow to the Dem's every wish and whim!! Don Rumpsfeldt was just the down payment on this!!!

He's going to rubber stamp everything the socialists throw at his desk, including all gun control bills!!

Bush took an oath the protect and defend the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic. Well, the terrorists have just taken over 2/3'rds of the American government!!! What's he gunna do?? He's dropping back five yards and punting!!

Gates is a damn fine president of Texas A&M, and yes, I'm Aggie. :p Speaking as to his leadership ability, he is a stelar choice.

Pucker,
No offense meant. Of course we value human life (even non-American life), but our first priority as Americans is Americans. We need our military intact, well supplied, well equipped, and well motivated. Now more than ever.

I think we can all agree in retrospect that invading Iraq was a bad idea because it wasted American efforts, lives, and capital on a venture that ran counter to American interests.
I take no pleasure in saying "I toldja so" at the expense of 2,800 of our finest. I wish it never happened. But it did and we're long overdue to fix it.

The worst is yet to come in this "war against terror" and we're not ready.

denfoote,
The rumblings I'm hearing coming from the left tell me that Gates wasn't their pick. Do you have anything to support that claim? (edit) perhaps I misunderstood your point. Did you mean Rumsfeld going out or Gates coming in?
