I have heard several "rules" of gunfights including
1. Bring a gun.
2. Misses don't count.
3. Shoot first.
4. Don't get shot.
5. Second place sucks.

Any other good "rules".

Your not dead until your dead. I've trained twice at the Orange County Laser Village in California and while studying their library of police shootings the one factor that saved lives was the desire and drive to live. I saw videos of officers who went down from superficial wounds (one was shot in the finger) and subsequently died while others who where severely wounded (even headshots) who continued to fight and survived. You must hone that warrior mindset that will drive you to take action in the face of insurmountable odds.
Several Officers were so mentally unprepared they simply stood there or layed there and were executed without so much as a fight. You must prepare yourself mentally to fight or to take a life, to study your surroundings, and to always be prepared while praying you will never need that preparation.

So to me the #1 rule is. Live.

Don't get into one.

If you DO get into one, shoot to win, whatever that takes. This if YOUR life we're talking about here.

There are a couple of primary rules in gunfights,
1. HAVE A GUN, within reason most any gun will do, this is a primary rule because it is hard to win a gunfight without one.

2. The best gunfight that ever was, was the one that never happened, hopefully this needs no further explaination.

Not original from me, but the saying that "if you find yourself in a 'fair' fight your tactics suck".

Prepare mentally for aftershock.

Realize that there may be more than one assailant

An extra gun would be nice to have

Lots of ammo would be nice too

Rules and tactics are similar, but not necessarily the same. I think you've mixed them up. Do you have any personal rules that are actually original?

Pay attention to your surroundings (and you may be able to avoid the whole problem), extricate yourself from the situation if possible before lethal force becomes necessary, if it's not possible and the fight is at hand, respond quickly, aggressively and decisively. Know yourself, your equipment, your capabilities and the law.
