Ruger vs. Remington 1911's....

Glad to hear you got your rebates, Mellow! Now you can start upgrading your R1s! Sportsman's Warehouse offers a 5% military discount off their already fair prices. I saw the R1 Commander there and thought about it for a few weeks then with the rebate ending I went back and bought it. I was fortunate the display gun was still there, so no comparing two or three, it was that one or go home without. I must say if I had to sell off guns I'd try to hang on to all of my R1s, I like them that much. The SR1911 is a nice 1911 but I love the classic look.

Considered both, and others, for a few months, went with the Ruger Night Watchman ($720 with night sights). Liked it best compared to anything $1K or under.

QUOTE: One thing I like about the Ruger is the integrally cast safety/hold open plunger housing.

Me too. It eliminates one potential thing to go wrong and a plunger housing loosening up is a problem (albeit unlikely) that more than a few 1911 pistols have had happen to them over time. I'm aware that if the plunger housing is installed correctly from the get-go, they won't loosen up but more than a few weren't/aren't.

Ruger. I have several now. None of the Remingtons I have looked at impressed me. RIAs etc. for less money are not bad. You can also look for a used SA. SA makes nice stuff.

I only held the SR1911 years ago and it felt great. It has more modern features. I own a bare bones R1 blued. The finish is great. The fit is okay, but admittedly pretty good for the price. It's a pretty tight pistol and the bushing needs a wrench to get on and off, a good sign (supposedly it is a match bbl and bushing). It has more A1 features with some modern accoutrement. I think they can be had pretty cheap these days. They are worth the price.

Rules, people!

Early R1's used a casting for the frame, later pistols are forged. Ruger has advanced investment casting to a virtual art....both should shoot forever.
