Ruger "Six" series vs. GP100

I have a 1988 Ruger Police Service Six, with 2.75" barrel in .357mag. It is a beautiful work of art and an extremely well balanced revolver, truly a pleasure to shoot .38 or .38 +P ammo.

I have no intention of ever getting rid of it with a more modern revolver that Ruger has decided to stamp massive amounts of words on them for some unknown reason.

I really like the finish and the trigger much better on the Six Series vs the GP or SP Series.

six for me

The Six series were more compact, lighter, and more easily carried. I ran the one I had with a handload pushing a 158 gr LSWC about 1000 fps....a midrange load. I didn't/don't need the weight and bulk of the GP series, or an L-frame for that matter either, as I shot very little full house ammo.

The Six series were what the K frame S&W should have been. Able to shoot .357 with no worries about bullet weight or cracked forcing comes. They are a K frame size (they fit perfectly in a K frame holster) but just a tiny bit weaker than an L frame or GP100. I read somewhere that ruger made very little money on them, which is why they stopped making them in favor of the cheaper to make GP.

I've owned quite a few K frame .357's. Nice guns, but when it came time to shoot 357 in them I was always a bit nervous. Not so with the Service Six I have.

Those with this position are not making a fair comparison. The GP100 is overkill for 38 Special but is the gun to have for 357 Magnum. I shoot real .357 loads in my Security Six 4" SS, but it's pretty sobering and requires ensuring that my grip is high enough and firm enough. The GP100 is just a friendly natural, at least in my 5-incher.

Traded a Smith and Wesson SD40 for a Security Six, had it at the range a few nights ago. While the firing line was popping off their XD's and Glock gen whatevers, everyone stopped at the roar me and my Six were making. They asked what I was shooting, I replied,"something they dont make anymore". My favorite piece of hardware.

Sec-Six for me, i've shot a buddies hot hand loads in mine, could of swore i was shooting warmish 38 spl.:D at the time. like what Homerboy posted, the Sec.-Six is what the K-Frame was supposed to be.
