Ruger security six

I can't help with grip information. I always has a set of Pach Grippers on mine. I'll never understand why Ruger stopped making this gun. Pound for pound it was the best 357 around. I gave mine to my son who still carries and shoots it regularly.

I round-butted my Security Six back in the 70's, and replaced the skimpy stock grips with Pachmayer Compacs.

I also have a 150-series speed six, and have a pair of Herrets grips for it, but I kinda like the stock smooth round-but grips on it. Sorta painful to shoot .357 mags through, but not bad with .38 +p+.

I have a Service Six stainless 4 inch with the skinny grips. I have tried Hogue, pachmayr, and some wooden grips from a gun mail order company (CDNN) and nothing fits right. I was thinking about contacting pachmayr and asking if they had grips for this model of service six.

asking if they had grips for this model of service six.

As far as I know, for fitting purposes there are only 2 models of the six series as far as grips go. The first years of production used one kind of grip and then all years after that used the other kind. The two styles are mutually exclusive. For Security Sixes, the serial number cutoff is a prefix of 150 or 151 (can't remember which). Find out when your six was made and then any of the grips made for the six series of that type will fit.

There were 150 series with round and square butt, a 150 series with an oddball locating pin location, then there were the more modern 151 series round and square butt versions.

If you have an early 150-series you can use modern Security Six Pachmayers that cover the back strap like Grippers- that's what my Speed Six came with- the previous owner drilled that oddball locating pin hole in the interior of the grips and through the steel liner.

Herretts makes really nice grips, if you haven't checked them out.

Owned one new in 1976 .4 in stainless .It will never be sold .

That's what I said until my son said he would really like that gun to start his collection. Now he and my grandson are enjoying it as much as I did.

iirc, around 1974 was the end of the old style grip on the security sixes. Just about every grip still available will be for the 151 and later prefix. You have one of the best revolvers ever made imo. Very robust. CDNN had some new old stock Sile rubber grips commonly used back in the 80s for around $10. I recently put a Hogue checkered wood grip on one of mine which looks nice and feels good too, just have to tap the roll pin (locator pin) out of the frame before putting the hogue on.
