Ruger Security Six

I went down to my LGS today to see if they maybe had the new Kel Tec KSG shotgun (yeah right and of course they didn't) and while I was browsing their selection of used handguns I came across a Ruger Security Six 357 Magnum for $295. I thought that was a pretty good price but not sure if it's the average going price for them. I know they're no longer in production. I did put it on layaway because $295 for a Ruger revolver wasn't easy to pass up. The fit and finish seemed to be in really good shape and the bluing was near flawless. I think there were some minor chips on the wood grips but no big deal, I may replace them with rubber grips at some point.

A Security Six is my next revolver purchase....I passed on a 6 inch barreled one a few weeks ago..but I want a 4 inch blued with original wooden grips...First I have to gather in some cash though....that stuff is hard to find....

In my opinion you did well on the price. In California a Security Six goes for $350 and over. Great revolvers and the best one that Bill Ruger ever built.
Enjoy,
Howard

Dude: I've been a volunteer at a local range for about 12 years. The guys who have security sixs love them. The 4" is a great shooter -- very well balanced. You did real well.

There must have been a special sale on Rugers today. I just picked up a nice, blued '61 single six with both cylinders for $160 today. Congrats on the great buy!

Good grief, any Security Six in decent condition for under 300 clams is a great buy, IMO!:) Ya done good.
Here's my stainless 4" a few days after I brought it home, three years ago. I paid a wee bit over $400 for this one & haven't had one regret. The Security Six is an excellent gun, don't let anyone tell ya otherwise.

My kids prefer the rubber Hogue grips, so that's what it wears most often. Funny story...both my daughter & mother like this gun best out of all my handguns...my boys only drool over the big-bore toys. My daughter wants this one left to her in my will.:D LOL!

Charger Fan-- Wow! that is a sweet looking gun. The 4" stainless is one of my favorites. They have such a good feel, the balance, the recoil, the weight, man... for a home/trail .357 they are hard to beat. Mine is a 79, what year is yours? I think they changed to the red insert in 79, unless mine was modified?

Here is a picture of mine, but they currently have rubber grips (more comfortable to shoot)

It doesn't get much better than the Security Six. Out of the 30+ handguns that I've gathered in my collection, the 6 is likely the last one that I'd part with. I'm the original owner, and it was the first centerfire revolver that I bought. It's one of the "Liberty" guns, built in 1976, and it represents many special memories for me. Mine is blue, but I'd also like to find another 6" in stainless.

Three of my four. The fourth is an unfired Service Six with no drag line, it came home from the factory with an employee and when his kids started selling his stuff, my FFL grabbed it for me.

They are great guns and really under appreciated.

Ruger Security 6 revolver

I bought a Ruger Security 6 used back in the summer of 1979. Third hand -- a friend to a friend to me.

I used that gun when I went through the police academy in 1981 and in the early part of my police career.

I still have the gun. About two years ago I realized that I hadn't shot it in 10 years (!!!) so I retrieved it from the vault to take to the range.

My old duty holster was long gone so I ordered a suitable concealment holster from (I think) Galco, and some Safariland 371 Split 6 speedloader holders.

The Security 6 is a strong gun designed to take heavy use firing full power .357 magnum loads.

The coil springs in a Ruger don't provide as smooth a trigger stroke as the leaf springs in the lockwork of a Smith & Wesson, but the design is sound and will last forever.
