Ruger Security Six

My first new handgun was a stainless Security Six bought in 1977. It's been cross country with me twice, carried in my jeep, under the seat of my truck, on the dash of my truck, on my hip while driving tractor, building fences, hunting, fishing....shot about a zillion times....it's built like a tank....

If i could only keep one handgun it would be my Security Six.

I love the Security Six like a long-lost brother. I have one in 4" and another in 6"... and I think my 4" is more appealing than my old Smith 66. Love the way you can take a Ruger apart and clean the guts of it. Wouldn't try that with my Smith!

Rugers are beastly strong... it's the one I reach for when I want to fire some warm .357 loads. They LOOK great... the recoil shield echos the SAA... puts a smile on my face. :)

Wonderful triggerpull... both SA and DA. It was good on the day I got it, but firing it a zillion times (and dry firing it ten-zillion times) has just made a good thing even better.

Something about this gun is just bursting with efficiency and good cheer. :)

Please do get one... you will not regret it!

I would take one over a GP-100 in a heart beat. I shot the bejeezus out of my buddy's Security Six over the years. When he bought a GP-100 I tried it, but found I preferred the older SS. His GP-100 mostly stays home in the box now (since the newness has worn off) while the SS is still rides to the range. Now I'm not a big Ruger fan, but to me there seems to be quite a difference in the Security Six and the GP-100.

Got mine in the 70's at Trader's Villiage, Grand Prairie for $225.....loved it.....past tense......when I married. my wife claimed it and its in her pickup to this day. In the early 80's we road hunted for jackrabbits to feed the dogs and for rattlesnakes. Where we were then, nobody cared. I installed a spring kit and did an Arkansas white stone job in the right places and it has the sweetest trigger I ever had. Brings back fond memories of the old in love and wild days!

My first wife bought me a brand new blue Security Six with the oversized grips for Christmas in 1988. Both are gone now, wish I still had the Ruger!

In the late seventies and early eighties I owned two six inch Security Sixes and two Speed Sixes. I carried the Speeds and shot in competition with the Security Sixes, one of which was the single most accurate handgun I've ever owned or fired, slightly edging out my pre-70 Colt National Match. I had to sell them all in 1985 due to economic hardship.

It took me twenty years to back in the club, but now I own a four inch Security Six and two Speed Sixes. The four incher was unfired in the box when I bought it in 2001 for $250 and I kept searching for Speed Sixes. Early in 2005, I found two Speeds, one had maybe 100 rounds thru it and the other was probably only fired for the two test rounds at the factory. Two of the chambers still had the smudge at the front, but the other four holes still had intact bluing.

I have done trigger jobs on all three, including stoning and Wolff reduced power spring kits and they all break like they were tuned by a revolver expert. Crisp, clean trigger pulls on all of them. The four inch wears Pachmayr "Grippers" and the Speeds wear their original small, wood grips.

These are in my opinion, the finest revolvers ever made and I will argue with the Smitty fans all day long. The Smiths are prettier and the old ones have better factory triggers but these Ruger Sixes still beat them in strength and have a utilitarian charm that the more delicate Smiths will never touch.

Go ahead and buy Ruger. You will never be disappointed and Bill Ruger is in no position to ever hurt us again, as he did in front of Congress. He was no friend to the Second Amendment, but he's gone now and his company made wonderful firearms.

Regards,

Rabbi

Very well said, Rabbi!

Majic,
I gotta agree with you. My Security Six just feels better than my GP100. The GP100 gets left in the safe while the SS gets to go out and play.

Not that there's really anything wrong with the GP100, it's a fine handgun.
