Ruger Security Six - A Good Gun?

If I could ask the forum for opinions: What is the general consensus on the Security Six? I like the look of them but I haven't seen one in person (I'm stuck on '70's era sixguns). Would it be worth the effort to locate a nice example in 357 to use as a regular shooter? (I'm currently focusing only on Colts and S&W's from the same era).

Great gun.

Well worth the effort to hunt down one (or two.. or three).

They are an especially good deal now since so many of the older Smiths have gone up so much in price. The Rugers are still selling for about the same amount as they were a year ago.

I bought one in late 1973. Put a set of Daley grips on it, and have been shooting it regularly, with .357 loads, ever since. My wife liked it so much that I found another for her. Both are 4", stainless models.:)

Thanks for the info....Sounds like I might just try to pick one up.

BTW, any ideas on the "going rate" for an excellent or fine graded 6" stainless example? I realize that these won't have near the "sticker shock" of a Colt or S&W. I'll check the bluebook, but there seems to be a pretty big disparity between what I see in the book vs. what is being asked on GunBroker for example.

While I'm asking, is "auctionarms.com" a legit place to Internet shop as well? I don't have any experience with Internet gun purchases, so I'm a little leery.

I got one two year's ago for $150.00 that looked rough but was in good shape overall.After a hot dip bluing it looks fantastic.I don't know if they are all this way,but the trigger on mine is silky smooth.Only problem is grips as mine is a 150,000 series gun and the grips look it.:( Iv'e purchased off of gunbroker with good success.That's where I got my super-bad MPA-10.
 
Get one, you'll love it. I've got a Service Six, which is the same thing, but with fixed sights.

You should be able to find a very nice stainless Security Six for around $275 to $325. That's the going price in my neck of the woods.
 
Yeah, I would say about $225 for a six inch stainless. Anything more than that and I usually wander on. Unless it is basically NIB. Then I might go up to $275 or so.

I _really_ like the Speed Six version with the short barrel but they are getting quite hard to find for a good price.

I think the prices of $225-$275 are pretty optimistic for a NIB stainless Security Six. I recently purchased a NIB 2 inch stainless secuirty six for $350. There are old blue ones for sale at $250-$275 but not any stainless ones that I've seen.

You might want to post on the Ruger Forum http://www.rugerforum.com/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/rugerforum/Ultimate.cgi?action=intro to see what is for sale or prices. I have seen some posted for sale in the classified ads. Also, you can get some sample prices as well.

The Security Six is a great revolver. I've had four over the years and wished I'd never sold one!

The Security Six is an EXCELLENT GUN !!!
It is every bit as strong an a Model 27 or 28. The only problem with the gun is you must change the grips to shoot it.

You are darned "Tootin" that the Security Six is one fine revolver! How could you go wrong with getting such a fine, well built(And, IMHO, a beautiful revolver!)as the Security Six is(Including all of the Six-Series revolvers!)at the currently low prices that these are selling for(Which certainly has no reflection on these revolvers being inferior in quality at all!)? I certainly love all of my NIB, Security Sixes! See the following pictures?:

I've had a 6" stainless since about 1978. I'ts been a great gun. About the same size as a K frame S&W, but a little smaller than the GP100 that replaced it. Mine has a real smooth and light trigger, and quite accurate too.

Would like to buy a 2 3/4" version if I could find one that was tight. Have begun to look for them at gun shows and shops, but seems like all of them I handle have loose cylinders--or cylinders that don't lock up as tight as I think they should.

I just got a 4" blue security six. I had to pay $275 otd, but he also threw in a soft case and some ammo. Mine is in fair shape, and it has the original wood grips. I've been looking for a long time, and when I finally found one, it was more $$ than I thought it should be, but with the no tax and extras, it wasn't such a bad deal. Sometimes, you gotta pay the price to get the what you want. This gun is not as pretty as my model 19 S&W, but it shoots as good and I think will be much stronger to shoot full house loads with.

There is no doubt about it-the Security Six is DEFINATELY much stronger than your S&W Model 19!!! It was designed to shoot .357 magnum loads continuously, from day one:eek: :D (Instead of .38 special's for practice and occasional shooting of 357 magnum's, as the Model 19 was!)!
 
My shootin' buddy's got one, a 4" blued. It's a sweet shooting gun, with a nice trigger. I think my 4" Colt Trooper Mk III and his 6" King Cobra are slightly more accurate, or maybe we both just shoot them better, but the Six will hold it's own.

The only thing I don't like about it is shooting full-power Magnums in it. Some hot 125 grain loads my Dad loaded up made the Ruger ring like a bell in my hand after every shot. Stung a bit. I've no doubt as to it's strength, but the heavier Colts felt better to my hand shooting hotter loads. The Ruger seemed a bit light for that. You hand may well tell a different story.

That's why my six inch Security Six has Pach Grippers on it! They fit my hands and they make shooting the hot loads a lot more comfortable.

The only real problem with the Security/Police Service/Speed Six is the grips. The factory grips were rather smallish and many people found them to be less than satisfactory. This really isn't a big deal though because replacement grips such as Pachmayr or Houge are pretty easy to find. The Security Six is every bit a strong as a GP-100 but about 4oz lighter (36oz as compared to 40). I also think the Security six is a better looking gun than the GP-100 (looks more like a Smith). Get one, you won't regret it.
