Ruger Precision Rifle

Isn't this just a Ruger American in a Chassis system with a few bells and whistles?

Nope. Not at all.

The design: three lug bolt, receiver design- and probably the barrel (though they don't say) are all based on the R.A.

BUT- it is NOT a chassis system. The receiver is integral, one-piece back to the AR-15 style attachment for the buttstock. There is no chassis. "Sort of" like an AR upper...

It's still just a dressed up Ruger American, just another entry level rifle trying to play with the big boys. I'll pass on buying one.
For the money, you can buy or build a lot better rifle and it won't say Ruger on it!

What did you build? Which action did you use? Which barrel? Which stock? How much are you into it for? What kind of groups are you getting?

I see nothing wrong with those wanting to get the RPR, I think everyone knows what it is.

But there are others that want something different, like you, but not telling us what you got is just leaving us all hanging.

The entire point of this rifle is entry level, so people who can't afford 3000-6000$ customs can get into PRS and actually compete without sinking a lot of money into it.

And no for the money you can't build a more suited rifle, not with those features. DBM alone is 200-300 + install, not including AICS or AW mags. Of which you don't have to use on the ruger. A nice chassis system or stock is going to be 500+. Savage or remington action is going to be 300+ it's not even close.

You might can buy it though. Savage 10 is as close as it gets around the same price.

New review.

I would like to add you can have a very good rifle for 1500-1700. Buy a Tikka T3 for 500-600$, take the action and put it into a nice chassis, then grab a bartlein. Little smithing work other than chambering the barrel.

I will wait a while until reviews come out. I have had issues before with the purchase of a rifle hot off the presses, so to say, that were sold a few months later.

Gentlemen, I don't know about y'all, but I think this rifle is the best gun value to come down the pike in many moons -- if it really is consistently as accurate as they say, and feeds as well as is claimed (albeit heavy for my usual tastes).

I think Ruger will sell a veritable buttload of these. Long live the free market. That's gonna leave a mark on AIs and other "factory custom-ish" rifles at 3-5 times the price.

They even did the twist rate on the .243 right, which is surprising (7.7). Hope they come out with a 26 incher in 6.5 CM (or better yet, .260 - but CM is good too).

I might even be persuaded to buy one of the .243 ones - what a great price for all you get. Just wish they'd find a way to lighten it a pound or more.

I think, what it boils down to, is "better" at what?
It's clearly a good value- hell, the adjustable AR buttstock alone is worth hundreds...

As far as accuracy, that will remain to be seen. Off the bench, I would be a doubter that it could be more accurate than a Savage LRP in .260. But as we've been saying, there's more to be considered if selecting an "entry level" rifle for Precision Rifle style competition.

Agreed, tobnpr.

Nah, I think it's many rungs or tiers up the quality ladder from the lowly American rifle (which I agree is not a winner, IMO) - apples and carburetors - did you just buy an AICS based rifle right before these came out perhaps, and have buyer's remorse?

(A) I don't think that's true at all, depending on your definition of "better", but certainly not with the same features - not even close to that price, and (B) I'm not normally a fan of Ruger, other than revolvers, but if they come up with something good, why shun it? American company, with generally good products. I mean, unless you're still boycotting for old dead Bill Sr.'s trangressions, which if you are, I respect that - but other than that, why shun Ruger?

Anyone know where to source a PSG-1 style AR-grip? I know Nill-griffe has one in wood, but it is expensive. Something cheaper lookalike?
