well there are two options I can think of that can be had new for right at $400 if you hunt hard enough. the first is the Ruger SR45, I hear conflicting reports on them but most of the negatives are from early production models, buying new shouldn't be an issue. the second is the first gen springfield XD45, which is currently being phased out for their XD Mod2 line, I've seen the old frame style XDs selling recently for $350 out the door and I would take the XD45 over almost any other 45ACP handgun in that price range.
I have no experience with the P series outside of dry firing but by brother in law had one that he wasn't very keen on and sold. my opinion is that they are very hefty, but have good ergonomics and decent enough triggers as long as you get the metal framed models and not the later plastic frames. If you ask me there is a reason that the P series were replaced by the SR series. I've never been impressed by any of the hipoints I've played with, they're very top heavy and heavy in general, they have a very non-standard manual of arms and they have horrible recoil impulse, there's a reason they sell for $175 new. the only experience I have with Kahr is with a single 40 cal model that locked back after every round and Kahr refused to work with the owner to fix the issue, even though this is only one of the many thousands of handguns they've made, it was still a bad enough experience that I will never own or recommend a kahr.
