Ruger MkII short cycle solution?

I may have erred in posting that MiniMags worked "fine." It's been a year since that testing day. They MAY have.
But I do know the function of the extractor as a pivot and that's why I changed it to the Exact Edge that DID ...change... the problem from the old one not coming out to the new one not going in.

And the REASON I didn't cut spring was exactly BECAUSE my current problem is the bolt not INSERTING the new round without an assisting SMACK on the rear. That's why in the OP, I was speculating on the lack of energy from the shorter barrel.

SOMETHING is not right with that pistol. I'm just gonna let Ruger puzzle over it.

Otto,

It is actually possible that SV ammo like you mentioned worked O.K.

The whole thing is that at 4" barrel, Ruger pistol with common recoil spring is right at the margin of reliable operation with a wide variety of ammo. On one hand, SV ammo produces LESS gun recoil acceleration. Recoil acceleration creates axial force (kind of force of inertia) onto the bolt, acting in the direction of bullet travel, which HOLDS bolt in locked position. But then, SV ammo also produces LESS gas pressure, needed to push bolt back. With HV ammo, it's opposite - MORE bolt holding force, but also MORE gas pressure.

With this consideration in mind, pistol with shorter barrel should have either
lighter bolt or lighter spring compared to the same pistol with longer barrel.
Bolt can not be realistically changed, but spring can...

Also, firm grip is important for reliable pistol operation.

I thought of "grip" too as I am an old light holding bullseye shooter.

Maybe I'll put a stock on it. :D

The spring conundrum has me buffaloed. If it were too strong, wouldn't it be expected to chamber a round? Or do you think it may not be going all the way back?

I even at one time thought about DRILLING the bolt.

Hi, Otto,

Thanks for the info on the H-S frame cracks. We sold a lot of those 100+ series pistols and AFAIK H-S never indicated that they were limited to standard velocity. I know several people who shoot HV in them; if I can contact those folks, I will pass on the pics.

Jim

I'm not sure about that part. I did notice in general that
if cartridge is not stripped from the mag fast enough, it has time to "tilt" and then chambering may become a problem. So, logically, if bolt is not all the way back, it comes back at reduced speed, and who knows what it can cause as a result.
