Ruger Mini-30 accuracy

About 15 years ago I used the NRA Gunsmithing Guide on accurizing the M-14 to accurize my Mini-30. I also fire lapped the barrel. It became an accurate rifle after that 1-2" at 100 yards type accuracy vs. 4-5" before. I got my first deer with it.

But then I got my first AR-15 and that's all she wrote on my Mini experience. I stopped shooting it for about 10 years then finally sold it 2-3 years ago - haven't missed it one bit.

Good luck.

i have few problems with absurd accuracy in ruger minis ever since I treat all semi-autos the same when shooting off a rest. I keep my hand between the forearm and the sandbag.

also its the mini14 that had the bad reputation for accuracy, not the mini30. however when using hunting ammo or reloads i always got good accuracy from a mini14.

that accuracy problem had a lot to do with a 1 in 7 twist being used to shoot 55 grain ammo through a skinny barrel.

The reputation is that they have horrendous accuracy and you'd be better off throwing rocks… But as you can see they are very good rifles and shoot quite well. I love my mini 14 and i don't know why they get bashed so hard, they really are good rifles. They aren't target rifles, but they were never intended to be.

people dump a lot of money into their AR's and have to justify it and reasure themselves they did good.

I think ARs are typically better off the rack than mini-14s, much-much better than the older models.... currently, it might be a toss up.

as for the mini-30, as I said; the new ones are reported to be very good shooters... I'd venture to say much much better than the standard AK or SKS spit out by some commie factory (there is a plug for made in USA)

and finally, it seems folks want the 30 or the AKs or SKS so they can shoot cheap third world ammo....

as mentioned... you get what you pay for and if cheap commie ammo doesn't shoot well, don't blame the rifle.

1/7 will stabilize a 55gr .223 just fine; the old 1/12 M16A1 is the rifle that had problems shooting 62gr. I'm not sure where you got that info from. The barrel on the older 185/186 series Mini 14 has a very thin profile, as it heats up it starts to string shots. It's a great rifle for what it was intended, but definitely not designed for distance shots while defending the Maginot line...

See mine below; law enforcement model w/ lug in case you need to do a bayonet charge.
