My wife recently got a lcp in. 380 for cc and while at our local gun shop they also had a lcr which i really liked..im not very familiar with revolvers but i am very interested in them and being a big ruger fan i have strongly been considering picking up the lcr in. 357 magnum for a smaller ccw in place of my full size 9mm..my question is this gun really worth the price tag im finding of 500+ or are there other options of roughly the same size and quality in. 357 for less..

Also this may be a stupid question but im not 100% sure ..i do belive you can also shoot. 38 special in the .357 am i right about this or am i mistaken..thanks

Thank you for confirming that for me..i figured if i got it i would shoot .38 at the range and carry it with. 357

Im really thinking about it and if do ill make sure to let you know i really liked that little piece the second i saw it i just want to do my due research before i purchase.

I paid $429 for my LCR 38 Spcl +P back in January. The price had not gone up as much as five dollars in over a year at this particular LGS.
My personal opinion is that the 357 doesn't have that much of an advantage in a practical self defense situation, but the the 4 ounces less in carry weight does make a difference in EDC.
All gun prices seem high today, but I think Ruger got this one right, and it is worth the money.
As for the price of the 357 model itself, the MSRP is $70 higher than the 38+P model, so I think that $500 mark is a reasonable one.

Cheapshooter tha ks for the advice ..i agree that for sd with most modern ammo today there is little to no difference in in most calibers..but the reazon i want the. 357 is because i grew up around it it was my grandfathers favorite round as well as my uncles plus i like the versatilty of being able to shoot both..

As far as the gun goes goes how have you liked yours so far?? Any big positives or negatives with it??

I'm very happy with it. I'v shot probably 150 or so rounds of CCI Blazer 158 Gr. LSWHP+P ( the old FBI load) that I have a case of on hand. It has been very accurate at 10 yards, and 100% reliable. After that much unjacketed lead the barrel did need a good cleaning, but accuracy never fell of at all.
The recoil with the 158 Gr. +P round is certainly noticeable, but to me not objectionable. Some may choose to differ. 38 standard pressure rounds and the extra 4 oz. should tame it a bit if recoil is a concern.
I do also like the 357, but have it in larger guns. The only one I have right now is a Ruger GP100 6" full lug. One of these days the greatful firearms fairy will smile down on me, and present a good deal on a S$W 19 4". But until that turns up I'm happy with my big Ruger, and it's little brother.

Yeah i think if i get it i will pick up one of those houge recoil reduction grips i think i have saw a few models before with these already on it..i hope you find a good deal on a 19 someday but it certainatly seems like the words good deal and guns just dont ever go in the same sentence anymore..

My personal experience is I have shot 158 grain .357 rounds from an LCR and I will not do it again. 125 grain .357 loads are manageable for me but I'm not going to shoot many of them at one time.

YMMV.

The LCR comes stock with the Hogue Tamer grips. Ruger sells an optional boot grip which is a little smaller. I personally would get the Eagle Secret Service grips, as I don't want rubber on my CC gun, but that's me. The Hogue grips are very highly thought of on this gun.

Yes, you can shoot .38 out of the .357 model. I've carried one of the .357 models and my experience was:
1) Good size, shape, and weight for carry.
2) Reliable, with zero malfunctions (though I admittedly didn't put more than about 100 rounds through it over several months);
3) A pretty decent trigger. I'm not all that particular about the trigger on a carry gun, but the one I shot seemed pretty nice.
4) Certainly accurate enough for SD distances.
5) Not particularly fun to shoot with .357s, but recoil was perfectly manageable with .38s.

I have been shooting and carrying a LCR 357 for Three years. I carry it as back up to a SP101. The first rounds I shot were Corbon DPX 125g 357. Not bad I liked it. I then shot mostly 125g JHP Reloads from Mastercast. Not a hot load kind of felt like the Corbon. I tried PMC 125g JHP. They were hard on the hand. 38 and 38+P are easy to shoot. Once you find a load you like the Gun is a lot of fun to shoot. It is ridiculous how accurate it can be with some practice. I carry it every day in my off hand pocket.

I've had an LCR for a couple of years now. I purchased the .357 model just so I could have the option of the .357 if I wanted to . . I've shot a few .357s out of it but I am a lover of the 38 spl. so that is what mine eats. When looking for a lightweight snobby, I compared the LCR with the S & W Bodyguard - personally I much preferred the LCR - it "felt" better in my hands.

Soe folks may complain about the trigger pull - but mine is booth and once you become accustomed to it - like any other pistol - it becomes second nature. I carry on the belt and am more of a "revolver guy" - hae shot revolvers for 50 years. I find it a very easy carry - light but rugged. I have a number of Rugers - pistols and long arms so I'm somewhat biased. Some folks also knock the "5 shots only" - I feel very confident that 5 shots would be adequate if required - which I hope never are.

Would I purchase another one again? You bet. Would I recommend one to a friend? Without hesitation. Like you, I also have a 9mm CCW that I use - a Ruger SR9. Both are excellent.

I don't have an LCR, having an SP101 to serve in that general role, but I suspect if I had an LCR in .357 the two loads I would look at the hardest for self defense (if I could find them) would be either Speer's 135 grain Gold dot in .357, or Remington's 125 grain Golden Saber. I would guess standard 158s or full-bore 125s would be a bit much .357 in that gun.

I'll bet I end up with an LCR one day, but I'm thinking I'd go .38 Special for the weight savings.

Well ive decided im going to start looking for one..with all the positive feedback im convinced..honestly any gun that says ruger on it is easy to talk me into..thanks everyone for the feedback when i find a good deal ill post pics.i want to buy new but if a deal came up on i used one i just couldnt pass up ill go used..once again thanks everyone for the feedback

I would definitely choose the .38 LCR, partly for the 4-oz weight savings, but also because the .38 Special is a better fit for the size and weight of the gun. There are some capable defensive loads in .38+P and even in standard pressures.

.357 Magnum really deserves a longer barrel for full effectiveness, and a larger, heavier frame to help control recoil.

Between the LCR .38 and the LCR .357, I strongly recommend the .357. I have tried a couple of .357 loads but almost exclusively shoot .38s out of mine, and .38 is pleasant to shoot in the heavier LCR, and not all that much harder to carry, even in a pocket.

So small difference in carryability, BIG difference in shooting comfort. Get the .357.
