The .32acp/7.65mm was for around 70 years, the most popular defensive caliber in Europe.
It wasn't until 9mm's gained double-stack mags & lightweight plastic bodies that it was eclipsed.
Low recoil means all sorts of good things when you are talking close-range shooting.
More shots made quickly on your aiming point, with nice .32 caliber holes for them to bleed from.
And its not very noisy...
I carry a .45acp and a .32acp (loaded with hotter 7.62's), so when its hot out (9-mos of the year),
concealment gets difficult when you are not wearing much, so the .32 gets carried most often.
Granted, in Florida, swimsuits & hawaiian shorts are zero protection against .32
