Ruger LCP Custom vs. LCP II

I had a Glock 23 that I passed to my son because after about two magazines, that trigger in a trigger would pinch and make my finger sore. From that experience, every time I see a gun with a similar trigger, I pass .

Just a precautionary warning. Massad Ayoob is a TFL member and therefore should not be personally attacked.

I hear you but he is also a public figure and makes a lot of claims as an "expert" which IMHO we have the right to refute. My verbiage might have been too harsh but the fact he is a member here does not mean I cannot believe that his opinions are less than stellar.

Disagreeing with a person is not a personal attack and comments about a person's opinions, also do not generally constitute a personal attack unless they move beyond refuting the substance of the opinions and begin to focus on the person who holds them.

None of the shops around here have the custom. They are waiting to get the LCP II's in. My choices are a regular LCP for $199. An LCP with laser for $259 or wait for the LCP II and they said it would likely be around $259 as well (I'm betting it is more like $279)

Right now I'm leaning towards getting the original LCP for $199. Thoughts?

I don't think you will go wrong with any of the three. I have a second generation original that I works very well. For $199 it would be my first choice.

I would not buy a LCP for $200 as a year or two from now, the used ones will be EVERYWHERE for $100-150. Heck, I've seen some used LCP's on GB with 3 or more mags selling for $150, so if they're already going for that now while still in production and still being a horrible gun, the prices of the original LCP are going to plummet.

I guess Truthtellers doesn't always speak the truth? The LCP is far from a horrible gun and well worth $200. Especially if you get the gen 2 (not LCP 2) which has a better trigger and better sights than the gen 1.

If it were me, I'd get the LCP over the LCP 2. Abundance of holster choices, the trigger is good enough, and the last round hold open doesn't matter much to me on a BUG or "belly gun" like the LCP.

The custom is out of production. I have the custom and my buddy has the regular LCP like you can get for $199. Both guns have similar trigger pulls and the regular LCP has better sights than the earlier models. He put some paint on his front sight which works well. I would get the $199 LCP.

I agree with your assessments Bart. The only difference is my LCP II trigger is better than my now departed Custom.

A Kahr was my choice for pocket carry and didn't think that would ever change, it has.

LCP II has that duty now.

Good on ya Ruger!

Allow me to rephrase that: the LCP is a horrible gun compared to the LCP Custom and LCP II. Alone, the LCP is okay, but not great.

Still, I wouldn't spend $200 on a new LCP, especially when I can get a used one on BG right now for the same price and it comes with extra goodies people are also looking to get rid of.

Methinks the LCP custom is still in production. I bought one yesterday and it has the new style 'no dash' serial number – just like the LCP II. This leads me to believe – probably in error – that both the LCP II an LCP Custom are in current production. Either way, I am very happy with my LCP Custom – it was $269 at Gander. Only thing I have had to do is order two Mec-Gar magazines from Fleabay. The US-made magazine that came with it does not latch consistently into the pistol - so it will be a range magazine. Gander had one of the Ital-made/Mec-Gar mags on the shelf, I tested it before I bought my LCP Custom, and it latched in perfectly with less rattle (but they wanted $42 for it!!)

I'm considering an LCP2 at some point in the future.

I've only shot the original and basic LCP. Jumpy little thing.

Are these guns practical to carry IWB? Is there enough grip to be able to draw smoothly or are these best left to pockets?

My 2009 LCP is one of 3 CC pistols I own, I really do need to pick up a spare of some type. The smaller the better when it comes to a pocket gun...

What about the virtual lack of sights on them? I was able to aim better than I expected out to 7 yards, but it sure wasn't as good as I am with a larger gun. I shot a similarly sized gun with 3-dot sights much better.

I saw some blogs where people just dab white paint on the tips of the sights on an LCP.

Is that necessary? Or helpful? I suppose this sort of gun isn't going to be used to take long-range shots most likely anyway.

A dot of paint on the front sight is a good idea. It works for me. With a little practice you will be surprised how accurate you can be.

I just brought home an LCP II yesterday. I had actually made up my mind to just get the regular LCP for $199 since it had been in stock. Went in the local shop and it had been sold, but they had just gotten in an LCP II and put it out that morning. Fate had spoken and I walked out with the LCP II. $259 plus tax. I only ran two mags through it when I got home on my property. I don't like to irritate the neighbors. Usually only shoot .22 or airguns at home. At any rate, the two mags ran with no problem. It shoots to point of aim and the groups were pretty good. It came with only one magazine, an extra baseplate without the finger grip and a little pocket holster. I have ordered a Desantis Slim Tuck Kydex for it. Pocket carry doesn't work in jeans that are even a little snug. Maybe a jacket pocket if the pocket was shaped right.
