Ruger Blackhawk reviews

Looking at the Ruger Blackhawk in the 6.5" configuration. Mostly for target shooting and as a collection piece rather than self-defense. Any reason not to buy?

Thanks,

I have one. It is one of the strongest 357 Magnums out there. It is very accurate too. If that's what you want there is no reason not to get one.

Probably my best recommendation is that the majority of guns in my battery are Ruger Blackhawks/Super Blackhawks.

I have a Blackhawk in 4 5/8 .45 Colt. It's built like a tank and is very versatile when reloading. Recoil is pleasant even with hot loads due to it's weight and the way it rolls back. The action is smooth and plenty accurate.

Very old 6.5 inch 357 mag with wood grips and I love it. Since owning it I've always wanted the 4 5/8 version and I've considered sending it into Ruger for a new barrel.

You're kidding, right? :D

That said (and please don't take offense if you WEREN'T kidding), I've got Blackhawks and Super Blackhawks in several calibers. Enjoy owning each one of 'em!

You will too!

Sent one back to Ruger for a cylinder issue and they fixed it, no questions asked. BEST customer service I've received in a long time. Ask others, I'm sure they'll agree.

 ... Not one reason that I can think of .... :o .... Most all my handguns are (S)BHs ... Barrel length is usually a personal choice and how you are going to use it. I have a couple 6 1/2" revolvers (a .357 and a .44Mag) . Most of mine are 5 1/2", while a couple have 7 1/2" (as well as 4 5/8 and 3 1/2"). All shoot very well and will last several lifetimes....

Ruger

I own both the Ruger Blackhawk .357 6 1/2 inch and a Super Blackhawk .44 7 1/2 inch. I've put over 3, 5 gallon pails of wheel weights threw these two revolvers, plus many thousands of full power jacked bullets and they both lock up perfect and are very accurate. The only change I've made is after market rubber grips because the grip frames were a mite small for my hands. Awesome handguns !!!!!!!!!!!!! hdbiker :)

For what you get, vs. what you pay, Ruger single actions are the best handgun value around.

I own several, and the 6.5" .357 is a good barrel length for getting most of the power the .357 can offer, and being more portable than longer barrels.

I've got a 6.5" .357, and a pair of 7.5" .45 Colts, as well as a 7.5" Super .44 Mag. Also have 4 Vaqueros in .45 Colt (2 SS 4 5/8" and blued 5.5 Vaquero and Bisley) Also have a 5.5" .45 Colt New Vaquero. Also a 6.5" SuperSingleSix. I like Ruger SA's!:D

I'm a BIG fan of Ruger firearms.
I have a 5 screw 357 and a New Model BH also in 357.
Both are great shooters and have never had an issue.
I have a few 44 mag Ruger's and one has been abused with over max loads, huge bullets and many wet mornings in the field and even that Ruger has never given me an issue.
Check you local pawn shop and bring cash.
I bought a very nice Stainless Ruger Red Hawk 44 for 375.00 once

My blackhawk was touchy and needed abnormal fussing inserting the cylinder. Replaced it with the double action redhawk and was happier. No doubt the Blackhawk cost less and was a very good shooter. I liked the single action and loading gate. But my cylinder just didn't want to go back in very well. And I had a second idea that I could load the gun and also use it for home apart from hunting. So the redhawk just fit that purpose a bit better. Makes it easier to clean and it's easier to flipflop 44 spc, 44mag defense & hunting ammo. Oh, and I didn't care for the factory grip on the Blackhawk so I put on a Hogue with finger grooves. Liked that much better.

I've had several Blackhawks. Don't really care for them. While they look SIMILAR to the old Colt's the proportions and balance are way off. The cylinder and frame are way too big for the grip. I think they just look goofy. The standard guns have an aluminum alloy grip frame that is coated with a black coating that wears off after time showing the bright aluminum underneath. When new they look fine, but as they age the 2 different metals age differently. But if someone wants a reasonably inexpensive gun that can take heavy handloads this is the gun for you.

The new model Vaquero's are a much closer copy to the Colt and are all steel. The looks and balance are there. But these guns have a smaller frame and cylinder that won't take the hotter loads. My preference is the Vaquero. If I want adjustable sights and pure accuracy I've found a quality DA with its much faster hammer fall and better triggers to be more accurate.

Any reason not to buy?

Nope.

As others, I've got a few.....357, 41, 45 and two SBH 44's.

All but the one 44 used for deer hunting at one time or another. Will most likely rotate the 41 or 45 in on our upcoming shotgun week starting this Monday. :D:D

Have never had issue with any of them.

I love the Blackhawk's size and weight, I have them in 357 SS 4 5/8 x2, 30Carbine cut to 5 1/2, 3 screw 44Mag 4 5/8 & 45C SS 4 5/8. I also have a birdshead Vaquero 3 1/2 45C (orginal run) & Redhawk 7 1/2 45C, I guess you could say I like them just a little:o
