Ruger and Springfield Armory

If the Ruger and the Springfield Armory fit your hand well then I don't think you can go wrong with either of them.

Other models that are likely to fit your hand well because they have either customizable back straps and/or side panels are the M&P line, the VP9, the fourth generation Glocks, and the FNS. All of these are excellent choices.

As was mentioned either the HK VP9 or the P30.
They both have interchangeable S, M, L side panels and backstraps included.
I am also one with very small hands and both those pistols fit me well.
The mag release on HKs is on the bottom of the trigger guard which allows people with small hands to reach them well.

Are you looking for a new/different gun, or do you like the SIG's and the 229 is just to much of a fatty?

I had both the P226 and P229, and the P226 is a bit slimmer, and fit my hand much better, than the P229's. Worth the look, if you still like the SIG's.

From the Modern Service Weapons website, post 09/15/2013;

"The (Walther) PPQ has arguably the best trigger of any of the current crop of polymer service pistols – short takeup, crisp break, strong reset (both audible and tactile), and short reset distance. If you pick your favorite polymer gun – Glock, M&P, HK – they each fall short in one of the above areas, while the PPQ shines in all of them."

Four of my last six Rugers have had problems. The pistols in particular have been very finicky about feeding. I have had two bad SR series guns already (no I am NOT planning on buying any more Rugers, at least of the new models).

So I vote for Springfield. Their service is supposed to be as good as Ruger's if there are any problems. But my two Springfields work fine.

I am in your boat exactly, GBClarkson,
I have tiny raccoon paws which puts lots of guns out of reach (literally).
I bought both a Ruger SR9c and a SA XD-S9 at the same time figuring that I would gravitate to one and sell the other. I ended up liking both and my opinion between those two is that if I had bought either first, I would have been equally happy with my purchase. If your mind is set on either of those two, you will be fine.
That said, there are other intangibles to consider.
--I was buying for concealed carry. B/c the XDS has only 6 and 9 round mags to choose from, I tended to carry the 9, but, in my opinion its shape and size make it more noticeable than the SR9c. I eventually replaced it with a Walther pps.
you might also want to look at the Walther P99AS as well as that one also fits my hand like a glove and the trigger is better than either.

BHP

THE....best fitting...most natural pointing auto is the Browning HP Mk111.....with the factory poly grips..or the aftermarket slim wood grips...

Have you tried the xds? My hands are small too and it seems to fit it just right, and the trigger pull I'd say is pretty decent and I've never had an issue with it

You can get a factory "Ergo" grip for the 229. It changes the grip profile significantly. Mine came with it, but i didn't like it and put stock grips panels on it. My hands are on the large side.

Went with an XDM

I went with the Springfield XD-M in 9mm. The trigger reach is much more manageable than the Sig P229 I traded in. I chose the Springfield over the Ruger SR9 because the Ruger's trigger felt stiff and I could not feel a break. The XD's trigger was much better. The Springfield was also lighter and comes with an accessory package plus has an online rebate for an additional accessory package. The XD has a 4.5 inch barrel and 19 round capacity compared to the 4.1 and 17 (I think) for the SR9. The Ruger has a safety and I have not shot an automatic with a safety switch in probably 10 years. The trade-in deal for my Sig plus accessories and ammo still in the box was even-up. I am converting from .40 to 9 so range sessions will be slightly cheaper.

I am pleased with the trade. I am looking forward to picking the Springfield up and taking it to the range. I hope my old Sig finds a good home. Thanks everyone for the advice and suggestions.

I've fired about 50 rounds of a Ruger SR9. I've shot over 1,000 in different XDS (XDs, XDM, XD Service, XD Tactical, XD compact). The Ruger is a nice gun for sure. I prefer the Springfield, but that is probably due to the amount of times I've shot it. Never had any malfunction with a Springfield.

I personally would go with the Springfield, but go with whatever feels best for you. It's as simple as that.

I've got small hands too. The Kahr K9 fits my hands better than any other gun I've ever held. The rubber Hogue grips make it feel even better.

I know you picked up the XD but if you ever decide to pick up a SR they are excellent pistols, but remember to insert a empty magazine in them before dry firing, the have a magazine safety firing pin block and it doesn't take much to mar the firing pin. I removed the mag safety from both of mine, took me about 3 mins per pistol.
