Ruger American nailing the plate at 1040 yards...

At our BangSteel.com practice match today, Steve Williams successfully nailed the 1040 yard plate 3 times in a row, shooting his Ruger American in .243 Winchester. Great job, Steve. :)

Thanks Dan !

Dan, your day clinic made all this possible.
What I learned during the day clinic was far more valuable than the $$ paid.
I was able to engage the steel at that range before, but it was mostly a hail Mary pass.
Now with the knowledge gained from the clinic, I can shoot extended ranges with confidence, even with a budget rifle. :)

The Bangsteel crew does a great job spotting/wind calls, and God has blessed them with a great facility for shooting long range.

If your budget and time allow, get with Dan and discuss a day clinic for yourself and a couple of friends, you won't come away from it disappointed.

Thanks again Dan for all your help !

Any rifle will shoot bullets and hit a plate 3 times in a row that far away. . . .once in a while. If they do it all the time, then that's great. Especially if that plate's a couple feet square.

Reminds me of the day a 50 caliber BMG benchrester put 5 shots in about 5 inches and set a record. In the preceding match, his 5 record shots fired in the same conditons were scattered over a 20 inch circle.

But BangSteel's a good way to learn stuff about long ranging hits instead of misses.

That's super shooting man congrats.... I want to come out there sooo bad but cant make it happen...I know I could learn something

Hey topnpr,

The plate was 24"X24" and my shots were scattered over 10-12" (2 @ 10 o'clock, and 1 @ 3 o'clock 1-2" from center)

The first two were fired and then a 1/2 MOA right and down were made for the third shot.

BartB - this wasn't the first time this rifle & shooter has done this, the other two times were @ 1030 yards, so this was the furthest it has been taken to date. (the hand load I'm running should stay supersonic out to 1200 yards, but I haven't tried it yet)

Please don't take any of this as bragging, it just shows that a budget rifle, and some training, can net positive results.

That's nice shooting Steve.

I'm going to guess that the rifle probably is capable of just under minute of angle ( I'd have to run out, and buy three or four of them if they were half-minute production rifles for that price!), so you were shooting right up to the rifle's capability. Can't do any better, than the stick you're driving!(luck aside, of course- which goes to Bart's point).

I keep saying....Ruger is liable to put their M77 line in trouble.

Thanks folks, for the kind words.

The rifle really is low cost fun piece to shoot.

The silly putty stock is the weak point in this platform.
I had to move my bi-pod back to 2" in front of the magazine to keep the stock movement from affecting POI.

Steve, I noticed that bipod placement right off. Do you find it difficult to load up behind? Its got to intensify things I would think.
Yes, I want to hear some Load data too.;)

Very nice :-) I'd like to hear some more info on bullet weight, twist rate, and load as well; good shooting :-)

Nice shooting... I wish I had a longer range ( my personal range is only 300 yards, & I'm looking at making a shooting stand to move down the driveway, that could get me to 600 yards )...

any special preps to the rifle, or is this as out of the box, with the bipod added ???

I'm not surprised that the .243 went that far. I'm actually not even surprised that the Ruger shot that far. But great job to the shooter for actually doing it. Maybe someone could be a Ruger American Spokesperson for these long range shots. Think about publicity it would be to a inexpensive rifle.
