Ruger American... again

I bought my ruger in February, and started reloading 270 shortly after.

I now have over 500 rounds though the gun, and I just can not get over how amazing these rifles are.

So far, I have done some free mods and have spent

Rifle - $350
Nikon prostaff 4-12x40 - $145 (50 rebate, coupon code, free shipping)
Bipod - $30

All in all, $525

Yesterday the range was pretty windy, 10-12 mph winds, 5 shots, 3 golf balls, 100 yards. The first two were a hair high, one click down, the next 3 were hits. This was the only one that wasnt vaporized. I truly feel at 100 yards, the only reason this rifle isn't sub MOA, is human error (which I have a lot of).

Ammo spec

140gr SST set .010" off the rifling
57.5gr of H4831SC
No crimp
Averaging right around 2900 FPS

If you are debating the Ruger American, I do not think you can do better for the money.

You're preaching to the choir, in my case.

My American in .308 Winchester had a problem with the scope bases being out of whack, but I dealt with that problem and have been very happy with the gun's accuracy.

One humorous note here is that the Ruger American was bought to serve as a backup for my beautiful, pricey Browning BLR - but the Ruger's groups are about half the size of the Browning's.

A lot of shooters are running across this problem with the American Vs their old favorite rifle, from what I understand...

Sure, it's kinda ugly and has to be oiled constantly so that it won't rust ( especially the outside finish on the barrel ) - but the accuracy is phenomenal.

My buddy has one in 30-06. I cant get over how accurate it is. I am planning to send a mauser out for accurizing and re-barrel. Considering the cost I could get a RA for the same money or less. Now im considering just keeping the mauser in the safe as-is.

What oil are you using? Have you tried a wax protector or RIG?

I used Rem-Oil from a spray can for a while... I have since gone over to Mobil One synthetic motor oil with much better results.

Remoil is total junk. If you have any left throw it away.

RIG grease is the best product i have found.
I have had one 3 oz can for about 4 years and have used maybe 10%. It works much better at protection of external metal in weather and over time than the other oils/CLPs I have tried. Was recommended to me by a gunshop that said it was the only thing they found that kept their inventory from getting fingerprint rust.

Why can't they make a Ruger American in .223?

They will for sure . The tide is turning . When I bought mine just after they came out . Half the reviews were bad and 1/4 of those were flat out trashing them . Now its hard to find a bad review on the RAR . I really think I'm going to get the compact 243 to go with my 308 . Then maybe the 223 :D

looking good RCP . well Took my rifle out of the safe last night to check it out . It's been sitting for a while now . I started dry firing it and was a little surprised how much trigger creep it has and it felt real gritty as well . I didn't remember it having that much movement and grit . It may be that I've been shooting and working with my new Savage that has a accu-trigger . It really seems like a lot of movement to me . Maybe I'll take it out of the stock and see what's up .
