ruger american 30-06

acetone

I don't soak. I just use a drop on a paper towel. Pinch the screw and back it out a turn or two. I see the telltale residue on the paper.
Loctite has a purple number 222 which is formulated for very small threads.
I use a stiff wooden cotton swab for the holes.
When it gets warmer, I look forward to some 200 yard verification shots with the Ruger 30-06 at the range using some different weight bullets. I'll be well set for next season. If I needed one of these in .223 or .243, I'd buy.
Local gun store has a couple on the rack. Doesn't make sense. Should be sold out. Must be a marketing / managing fault at Ruger for failure to sell a pretty good product.

I have a few observations.

1. Its intended as a LIGHT hunting rifle and not a target rifle (though it seems to do pretty darned good at that as far as accuracy goes from he reports)
Ego, if you are going to shoot it a fair amount for target (agree it is a lot of fun) get extra padding of some kind. Slip on Limb Saver, the (Pats?) slip on kind, etc. Accommodate to what it is and don't fight or be unhappy for what its not.

2. If you are just going to get a different stock for it, consider getting a Remington 700 (or the other one?) By the time you get the stock and pay the freight you are into a nice appearing rifle. Nothing wrong with wanting nice but the RA is a focused hunting rifle and appearance is not why you buy it. Its a very paired down functional gun.

And lastly just personally, anyone shooting 5 shot groups with it and how does it do.

I am on a bit of a quest for a low cost rifle that shoots well (make me feel better after a bad day of not shooting the iron sights on the 1917!)
