Ruger american 30-06

My buddy picked this up at xmas time. 3-9 Nikon prostaff. I have been impressed with the accuracy of the rifle during the break in period. It now has about 100-150 rds down the tube. To make things sporting we put 1" red dots at 100yds. My worst shot today was 1 shot that split the edge. Out 20 rds each fired in 4 shot groups we had 3 shots that fell out of the 1" dot. IMO this is very impressive. This Rifle sells for about $375 less scope.

That sounds like a nice little set up . I have one in 308 and can't be happier with it . I'm able to shoot sub MOA out to 300yds and thats with a $60 Tasco on it . It can beat you up though and after 20 or 30 rounds I can feel my self start to antisapate the recoil .

I just picked up the 30-06 version and mounted a Bushnell trophy xlt DOA 600 to it. I also polished the bolt with some Mother's mag polish and it is pretty slick now. The trigger is very crisp. Not sure what mine is set at from factory but I like it. May adjust it when I zero it in this coming weekend.

My american in 270 has become my project gun. It's great out of the box, and can be made even better for about $5 and a few hours of work. If it's a target only gun, fill the stock with plumbers putty, do the trigger mod, and clearance the stock around the barrel.

Heres 2 write ups I did.

As far as filling the stock. I bought two containers of plumbers putty, 14 ounces each, it was just barely enough.

Thanks for that! I am going to sand down some of the fore end also. It's not touching anywhere but I'd like a little more space. That trigger job looks simple.

I have one in .243 Winchester. I have shot mine 16 times, and consider it to be fully "broken in." The first load I tried in it grouped exceptional. It is zeroed and Cold barrel verified. Its ready to go to the woods. All it needs is one fouler down the bore the day before deer season. In my opinion, Ruger should have finished this rifle up pretty, put it in a nice stock, and sold it for $700 plus. They are accurate rifles.

RCP Fab, I am wanting to learn something new. Why fill the stock with plumbers putty? Weight? Stiffness? I have used epoxy, bondo, elmers wood glue with shotgun shot and a few other things. Plumbers putty never dries hard does it?

I sanded my barrel Chanel out . I used sand paper wrapped around 1/2" flexible conduit . Started with heavy grit and worked my way down . I did not do as much as RCP fab  but there is way more room then there was .

Thats all the work I plan on doing to it . I'm keeping it as the way it was intended to be , a light weight hunter to carry all day if needed .

I have one in 270. With random hand loads I am getting 1.5 inch groups. That is decent for a 350$ rifle. I am sure I can get better with load development.

Glad to hear that all of you have had similar results with your RA. I may end up buying one for myself. I already own 3- 30-06's but I just cant see myself buying a different caliber, more cartridges, more dies etc... On the other hand I am thinking this may be a good rifle to explore long range shooting. My Rem pump gun cant do it. Its a 2 shot group then wait. Makes a great hunting gun but its boring at the range unless you just want to burn powder and $$$ fast.

The back of the stock on the ruger doesn't give me an issue, with or with out the putty it's as stiff as it can be, I feel. You can't squeeze it (side to side) with the putty in it, like you can without, but that doesn't really matter when shooting it.

The weight (and possibly the density) of the putty is what I was after, HUGE reduction in felt recoil.

The front of the stock needs some work, it gets pretty flexy as the barrel gets hot.... but I am not a shoot 3 or 4 rounds and let the gun cool sort of guy. I just don't care, I bought a $350 rifle and when the barrel is toast I will buy a new one (or rebarrel it, just for the challenge of making a barrel).

When I figure out what I am going to do with the front of the barrel, I will do a small write-up on that as well. Right now, I am thinking epoxy of some sort.

I picked this one up at Bass Pro, back last fall. After discounts and using my accumulated Bass Pro points, I think I was some $250 out of pocket.
The scope is a Redfield Revolution 3-9X. I even got a $30 rebate on that! Mine is in .308 Winchester, and it too is a consistent sub minute of angle shooter.

How long has it taken you all to receive the free cheek pad? Been close to 2 weeks for me. Just wondering if I will have by this weekend?

I didn't even order my cheek pad. Did not look like anything I really wanted. How hard would it have been for Ruger to just put the stupid thing in the box with the rifle in the first place?;) That would have been too simple.:)
