Ruger American .243 at 650 yards...

Ruger American

I had same results with the RAR in 22-250 new out of the box, dialed scope in and shot a 3 shot group a quarter would cover! WOW what a piece for the money! That was at 100 yards. What Ruger did is amazing.

real resurrection job for this thread - someone asked for a report

I had to send my scope in so that delayed my response and I forgot about the thread.

This is a typical group.

Here's another:
http://i.imgur.com/VfCPpQJ.jpg Not sure what happened at 1:00 and 4:00, but the problem is probably me. I might have held the rifle in my shoulder pocket a little differently so it pivoted just a teeny bit under recoil, or I yanked the trigger. Still under an inch at 100 yards.

I have been saving my brass to reload, but honestly I don't think I'll bother for a while when I can find Fed Fusion for around a buck a round and projectiles alone are $.30+ What'd be the point? Developing an accuracy load that's almost as good? Lot of time and effort for little benefit.

Ruger American .243 + Fed Fusion makes me giddy.

Well, ammo that costs 1/2 as much would be a pretty good point. ;)

Less really. 30 cents a bullet is closer to the most expensive than the cheapest. Even Sierra MKs are only 23 cents each. You're looking at 23 for the bullet, 20 for the powder and 3-5 for the primer and 3-5 for brass. 53 cents a shot, give or take.

Save the other 47 cents a shot for a new barrel. ;)

Economy rifles outshooting more expensive offerings from the same manufacturer isn't new. From what I heard about the Rem. 788, it was discontinued partially for that reason. I had one in .22-250 with a 24" barrel that was a tackdriver.

loved my old 788 in .222rem, what a tack driver, unique design 9 rear locking lugs on the bolt. i sold it to buy a 700vs in .222rem and for all that money and fuss, the 788 shot every bit as good as the 700vs, but without all the added weight. now i have an rar in .243rem ... really really nice ... just waiting patiently for boyd or stocky or *someone* to offer a better chassis.
