Ruger 77 Gunsite Scout with synthetic stock

Does anyone have one? What is your impression; does it feel solid or does it have that thin hollow butt feel?

Ruger's info says its "lightweight" but also that it has a forward aluminum bedding block and a rear aluminum pillar. I don't like the plastic stocks with the empty butt that has a hollow knock to them, but a good solid glass stock with a bedding block is nice.

hollow

I can't help you with an opinion on the Ruger, other than I like Scout's in general. But, one trick I use with hollow, factory synthetic stock's is remove the recoil pad and jam the hollow buttstock with styrofoam packing worms.

Seems too that I recall an account of somebody creating a channel to the stock bolt with a length of PVC pipe, then shooting the buttstock full of the expanding foam insulator stuff.

Never tried that one myself, but the worms deaden the hollow stock well, and weigh next to nothing.

You'll have no issues with the stock. In my opinion is is quiet enough as is, but fill it with packing peanuts if it bothers you. Easy fix.

Roger. I think I will drop in on a couple of LGS today and see if they have one I can handle. I hadn't thought of filling the butt, that might do the trick. I have a Bell & Carlson stock, it's solid like a brick, that's what I prefer in a synthetic stock.

So, I just returned from a LGS that had a couple synthetic stocked models on the shelf. I would describe the stock as molded plastic. Certainly not the cheapest appearing that I've seen, but not really to my taste. I think I would stick to the wood lams.

On different but related note, I was really surprised at how loose the mags fit. I'm not merely talking about side to side slop like an AK, but also fore and aft. It may be a non-issue really but now I'm curious if they might not have occasional feed issues. They come with what appears to be a single stack mag that holds 10 rounds and hangs down pretty low but 5 and 3 round mags are offered by Ruger. I know Ruger's conventional non-detach magazine is so very reliable with the 77's controlled round feed, it would be a shame to spoil that reputation with magazine issues.

Buy the one you want, but the laminated stocks are a full pound heavier. Even with the synthetic stock the rifle is still heavier than it needs to be for what it is. One of the reasons I never bought one is that they didn't offer synthetic until recently.

Weight really isn't the primary issue... these rifles with their stiff 16" barrels which are pre-threaded 5/8 x 24 are on my list for consideration as I shop for a suppressor ready 308. The mag wobble is a buzz kill though.

I'm putting a Howa with a 20" pre-threaded #6 contour H bar ahead of the Rugers now.

Thanks anyway for your 2 cents.
