Ruger 77/17 nightmare!!

case splitting was a known problem with some early 17 hmr ammo.A recrown might help make your gun more accurate.
Im surprised more people here didnt know these things.

A little Advice

First, your gunsmith sold you a lot of mods without really evaluating the problem. I think your gunsmith led you down this path without really fixing your problem which may indeed have been the barrel. I hope he did good work so you are not out all the money without anything to show for it. Many people find that barrel to stock contact at the front of the stock is important in a rimfire. My 77/17 in mach 2 will shoot about3/4 inch at 50 and about 1 to 1 1/2 inches at 100 with only a cheap simmons 3x9 scope and a bit of trigger work. It is not free floated. If you have the 17HMR I would suggest you get a green mountain barrel in 17hmr or 22 mag. Either will work. Just decide if you want to stick with the caliber you have. 22 mag is more versatile if you don't already have one.

The 77/17 is an easy gun to work on if you have a steady hand, a few tools and some basic skills. If you get a green mountain barrel and have good stock bedding, there is no reason you can't get 1/2" groups at 50 yards with a good quality scope. Give your gun one more chance before you throw in the towel. Get a good barrel and let us know how you do. BTW, if you fire a cartrige in rifle A and try to put the brass in rifle B more often than not the brass will not cross over between both rifles. This is completely normal. Bottleneck cartridges always blow forward and have to be "resized" during reloading which pushes the shoulder back to factory specifications. Having said that, put a barrel of known quality on your gun and see what happens. That is after you and a good shooting friend try at least 3 different types of ammo in your current barrel. You may have gotten a bad lot of ammo or you might just have a defective barrel.

Wouldn't be the first time I've seen a el'cheapo Simmons out shoot and outlast an expansive scope

My last "cheap" scope lasted all of 3 rounds in my 30-06 before grenading..... I've yet to see a cheap scope worth buying... Anything that says simmons is a waste of money and time IMO...

Too Funny!

If you bought a brand new Cadillac and the engine breated black smoke and got 8mpg I don't think you'd send it to the mechanic at Walmart and have him install a supercharger, then after that didn't help finally send it back to Cadillac.
:p

That was good.

Straight from the Ruger 77 Manual

DO NOT alter the stock bedding in any way.
Do not scrape away wood, and do not bed with “glass,” plastic, epoxy, etc. Once a rifle stock has been altered, it cannot be reworked by our Product Service Department. If you still have an accuracy problem, write a brief letter to our Product Service Department, 411 Sunapee Street, Newport, New Hampshire 03773 and describe the nature of the problem based on the use of factory-loaded cartridges – not reloads. You will receive a prompt response from us and if indicated, detailed instructions with regard to the return of the rifle.

If it's a relatively new 77/17, I believe the barrel will be threaded into the action. Ruger doesn't use the V-Block system like on the 10/22 for these anymore.

Also, the two piece bolt design on these is known to problem.

Check this place out if you haven't already. You can send them the entire barreled action to reset headspace, and tightem the bolt, or just send them the bolt to be tightened. Some people shim the bolt themselves to tighten it.

Here's the link. Look under the 77/22 section. It also lists the 77/17

Ruger nightmare

Ruger has an implied warranty and because of that,it varies by state. They really frown upon people changing around their guns, that will void all warranties. If the cases are splitting ,it is because of the chamber.

Sorry u r having these problems. I think w/all the help here you'll have your good gun shooting well down the road after a coupla hundred rounds.

Peter Weber -- calling "shenanigans" on your Mini-14 with quarter-sized groups at 100 yards. Not even with a trigger job...

Hopefully he has had time in the last two years to get this sorted out.......

(Hint, look at the date of the original post)

Yeah, Chasu (5 posts, he's a newbie, so he gets some slack) brought this thread back from the dead. Now we just need to get some of that Hornady Z-max ammo to put it out of its misery.

Again I must be the only guy on the planet that has all accurate Rugers. I have never had a bad one and I own and have owned many.

No you are not. Ruger's are just as accurate as the next rifle. Till you start messing with them.

I vote for the kids as well. Ya think they could pull off a re-barrel?
