There's another similar product called a Mo-rod that I have on my 183-series Mini-14. Go to:

http://www.mo-rod.com/

It has done great at controling the barrel whip and keeps the shots from stringing as the barrel heats up from rapid fire. The people at Mo-Rod give excellent service and the price is under $100 delivered. Mo-Rod is available for all models of the Mini-14.

With 55-grain bullets I have a consistent 2" group at 100 yards using iron sights. That's plenty good for my purposes.

With the Mo-rod you can add accessories:

Lots of PDs use M16/M4s, but I don't know of any cop or department that uses Mini 14s except Gibbs on NCIS. (and he's suppose to be a sniper, TVs geessss.

There's a small local PD in my area that uses the Mini-14, probably due to the price more than anything else. I have heard good reports from them, but I doubt they're qualifying beyond 100 yards. Although with current retail prices what they are, the Mini really isn't that much cheaper than an AR.

Older Mini-14's normally shoot terrible with 55 grain ammo. They have fast twist barrels and shoot a lot better with a quality 68/69 grain bullet. I had good luck with the 64 grain WW PP bullet, my scoped 1990 Mini-14 consistently put 5 rounds into an inch at 100 yards with this bullet and 25 grains of 2460.

kraigwy...... The reason gibbs used a mini-14 is becouse he took it away from a park ranger and shot him in the ass. It wasnt gibbs' rifle. duh..

Bernie, thanks, I didn't know about the Accu-strut. I don't *think* it was around when I was modding my -30, it looks like a relatively new product. For $100, while a little steep, it's a lot easier and cheaper than a new barrel.

Bama, right on! Gibbs took the rifle off the serial killer Ranger.

Gibbs: "How many?"

serial killer Ranger: "26... no 25, I haven't killed the last one yet."

I tuned mine by hand loading rounds for it. Fortunately for me it likes the exact same rounds that I use for my Bushmaster. I think mine is from the 90's and it is a Ranch Rifle variant. No after market modifications and it shoots golfballs at 100 yards all day long. With factory ammo, it sprays all over the place, with my hand loads, tight.

Ruger has changed the barrel twist rate in Mini-14's several times since they began manufacturing them. Knowing what series of Mini-14 you have makes a big difference on what ammo will shoot best in your rifle. The first 3 numbers of your serial number before the hyphen is your "series".

Before the series 185-187 rifles all Mini's made had a 1:10 twist that will shoot light bullet weights up to 62 grains best. Then somewhere in the middle of 1989 they changed the twist rate to 1:7, a fast twist that will shoot heavier weight bullets in the 69 to 75 grain range best. Again in the middle of 1994 until present day they have used a 1:9 twist that is a compromise between the two that will handle a variety of bullet weights.

From another Forum:

"Looking at the book, Ruger and his Guns, I found that the twist rate of the Mini-14 started out at 1-in-10" in 1975. It then changed to 1-in-7" in 1989 and then finally to the current 1-in-9" starting in mid-1994.

The serial numbers are approximately:

1975 to 1989: All, 1:10 twist
1989: 185-56000 or for the Ranch Rifle: 187-84000, 1:7 twist
1994: 186-35000 or for the Ranch Rifle: 188-75000 to current, 1:9 twist"

Figuring out what barrel your particular rifle has will set you off in the right direction to find the most accurate round for your gun.

Thanks to everyone for their wealth of information and thanks for staying on track.

From what i gather in regards to my original question:

My Mini 14 is a 1:10 twist since it is a 184 series made in 1986.

It might shoot better with the lighter bullets which is what I load and is not working for me.

An Accustrut might help.

Flash Suppressor might help [got one!]

Re-torqueing the gas block bolts might help, 30-36 inch pounds.

Gibbs shot a ranger in the ass and stole his mini. [Gibbs in the man but my eyes on Zeva!]

APD had mini's that sucked while AK HP carried AR's.

We're on a role here!!!!

I got some work to do. thanks,,, randy

I have a new mini tactical purchased about 6 months ago and it shoots 1.5" at 100yds. I am currently loading 55 gr v max which are accurate, devastating to rock chucks, and relatively affordable. I used to have an older mini which did not shoot very accurately at all but the new 580 series are much better.

]I]What are you saying kd7sgm?

Are you wanting me to trade with you so my gun will shoot better.

Getting a newer gun isn't what i had in mind.

Trying get get the one I've got to shoot better.

you are quick....just wrong. you asked if the accuracy of your rifle is acceptable. I was pointing out that it is normal for your older one but not for the newer ones. So yes, it is acceptable as it is yours and you bought it. what does that have to do with trading? maybe you should research a little prior to your next purchase.
