Ruger 10/22 impulse buy: What did I just get myself into

It's reliable but not the most accurate out of the box. It's accurate enough for tin can plinking but a tack driver it's not.

The RR is also listed as having a 20'' barrel instead of the std carbine's 18.5'' barrel.

I can indeed confirm that it does have a 20 inch barrel. I put it side by side with my SKS which also has a 20 inch barrel, and both barrels are the same length.

Is the 10/22RR uncommon? I didn't know these were out of production.

American Eagle--Congrats on the purchase. I have 2 of them.Very accurate rifles. I have never seen a need to do a trigger job as is mentioned here so much. Trigger is just fine the way it is. They are the harley Davidson of 22's for sure. There are more after market thingfs you can do to these things than there is money in the world (ha ha). YOU WILL LOVE IT AND IT'S CHEAP TO LOVE TOO.

Don't assume that it is out of production!

Nothing that I see on their website, indicates that it is out of production. As stated before, this is a dealer exclusive. No, not common as far as Walmart but certainly not rare. You would have to confirm with the "Exclusive Distributor" that it is still available. Your dealer got it through this distributor. This is done all the time. ....

Let's see, you just bought one of the best .22lr rifles on the market made by a company that backs it's products without question and has a ton of aftermarket accessories available for it. Yeah, you made a bad choice. :)

American Eagle-
If your like me you just got yourself in trouble! I bought my first one back in early July and less than two months later I've replaced ALL the parts with KIDD components(barrel, receiver, trigger, bolt etc). Turned into an addiction. Ended up costing over a grand...and after swapping out all the parts, I have 2 10/22s. The KIDD 10/22 is seriously an amazing rifle...I can't say enough good things about it.

LOL You got yourself into a very good, most-popular-for-a-reason, semi-auto .22 is what. I still think its the best value on the market. It even has a wood (albeit mystery wood) stock. Congrats!

The only obvious negative is the trigger pull which after a bit you may take notice of. A cheap improvement is the Volquartsen drop-in hammer/spring replacement for about $30 delivered.

Enjoy, and be safe!

Yes Eagle, they are "still" that good.

Without meaning to do so, American Eagle has brought up a point to ponder and simply put, this is still just another 10/22, that will "never" go out of production. From it's inception, the parts are basically all the same. Not only that, there are more after market parts available, as Dr Heckel has demonstrated and by the way, that is one beautiful example. .... ;)

There are older models that can only be purchased as used and they bring a handsome price, like the Canadian or finger grooved. I finally regained my senses and worked my way down to three but know a collector that "says" he only has two dozen. ...

Rest assured, you won't regret buying yours. ...... :)

I've been thinking the same thing lately (time for a 10/22!).

Always admired them, but as a kid I simply borrowed my dad's Marlin Model 60 for plinking. However, I'm afraid it didn't fair well against my friend's 10/22 every time we went shooting, but at the time, I was anxious to save up for my first "big" guns, so a .22 rifle wasn't a priority. In college, I bought my Ruger MkIII on a whim to cover light plinking territory. So the 10/22 has thus far evaded me, but it won't much longer.

To the OP, please don't convert your 10/22 to a Mall Ninja assault weapon.

Call me old fashioned, but I like the basic models. You can dress it up all you want, maybe wear a headband and body armor when you shoot it, etc, but it's still a .22 rimfire. Save the "tactical" stuff for the big guns, if you must even then.

AE,

You have the 10/22 RIFLE instead of the carbine. I think it is the better of the two, and you will look a long time to find anything wrong with the way it shoots. However, the trigger is a little rough but can be replaced with a match one. And the magazine is a pain to release, get the extended mag release to solve that, I still use the one that came with the rifle.

A. It is the most purchased (popular) 22LR semi-auto out there, millions.

B. It is the most easyest to dress up or change, just don't go crazy (hard not to do) you could spend $50.00 to $1,000 to change it, there are that many accessories for it.

Have fun with it, it is a tack driver.

Not quite. The Marlin 60 has sold over 11 million rifles compared to the Ruger 10/22 s very respectable 5+ million...

They're great rifles. The 10/22 and Marlin 60 really rule the roost when it comes to semi-auto .22lr. Have fun!
agreed, I've had both, the ruger has reliability and aftermarket and the marlins got accuracy and compactness. your 10/22 will not disappoint you. and if you ever decide you want an AR15 typed rifle that's cheap, archangel makes a stock that will convret that little 10/22 into an AR.

Fishbed77-

The stock in my pic is a Revolution Eliminator in granite grey purchased from Stockys. I absolutely LOVE it. It is hands down my favorite stock Ive ever had. Well made and inletted tightly. The grip on it is suprisingly large but Ive got decent sized hands so it fits me perfectly and is the best part IMO. Cost isnt cheap but not too expensive either at $175....well worth it.

come on over

rimfirecentral is the 10/22 site of choice. This is a great general site but there are a lot of good gun forums on the net for specific interests. This is just one of my favorites.
