Rounding out your collection

I daresay you aren't comparing good .22 target ammo, which is what you would have to do for a fair comparison. A Handloader of long standing can produce a very superior target load for not much money, particularly with cast bullets. Shooting a .44 Special with handloads is very rewarding. IMHO.

Agree. The bottom line is that my first post was made assuming OP is not a handloader. If he is, then getting .22 gun probably makes to sense.

Nice collection so far!

I will throw out something slightly different just for fun:
What about a Smith 1917 or a Smith 547. Double action revolvers chambered for auto cartridges. Now the 1917 does need the half moon clips, but the 547 does NOT.

I only throw them out, b/c I would like one of each in my collection, so get what you like and happy shopping.

There's no way you can beat the price of bulk .22LR ammo, unless we're considering the current panic pricing to be "normal". Not even casting your own bullets with free lead. Even then, the time spent wrangling lead, sorting it, processing it and casting it and sizing/lubing then handloading it has to be factored in somewhere. Back before the panic, I was ordering .22LR online by the case for less than it costs at Walmart, which took all of about 15mins. How long does it take to cast 6300 bullets and handload them??? For me, that would be at least 16hrs JUST handloading them on a Dillon 650. On my turret press, more like 63hrs. Not insignificant.

I passed on a very nice (not mint, but great shape) 547 about 8 months back that was priced under $500. I've regretted it and I think it may haunt me for some time.

I haven't seen once since and I'm sure that when I do... it'll be somewhere north of $700. :(

Regret... it sucks.

If the lock is important to you (as in prefer pre-lock), I would look for a S&W M17 (usually 6", but 4" also) or M18 (4"). These are 6-shooters. They can be had in the $600 area in excellent condition. The M18's are a little hard to find. They seem to get scooped up rather quickly when they are in nice shape if the price is ball park fair.

What about this:
The Smith and Wesson .44 mag Darth Vader edition
(ok, the 629 Performance Center V Comp)
I've had my eye on one for a couple of years and finally took the plunge. It's most excellent.
