Rounding out your collection

I'm getting the bug for a new revolver.
Don't want anything more powerful than 44mag.
Don't care for single actions.
Current collection includes:
6" model 629
6" Colt Python
4" 625 in .45 Colt.
I think a pre lock 4" 686 Smith would be nice or a Ruger GP100.
On the other hand I've always had a hankerin for a nice .44 special or a .41 mag. Then again my .22's have always been autoloaders.
This would be strictly for target shooting.
Can't make up my mind which would be the better choice.
Anyone care to express their opinion?

Strictly for target shooting and considering today's ammo prices .22 would make most sense. S&W 617 would be very similar to the 686 you are considering, but in .22LR.

Your snake could use a relative, Cobra, Diamondback ( my next snake ) or Anaconda. Just to throw out something different. Or maybe something in SA, would have to be .45 LC.

If you want a K frame...model 19 S&W comes to mind ...in Nickel or blued /I prefer the Nickel...and probably a 4"...

If you want an N frame...model 27 ....in Nickel or blued ...and 4" ..../Nickel again for me....

You might consider a single action revolver...Colt SAA or maybe a Freedom Arms ( depends on your budget )....and they're both available in .357 Mag and other calibers...

I'm actually looking for some civil war guns. An Enfield Pattern 1853 and a Colt Navy 1861. Might have to get one of those Pedersoli replicas of the Enfield because originals are hard to find.

Brutus, you have things covered or rounded out already in 44 mag or less, except for a good revolver in 22LR. I would look for a Colt Trooper Mark III, S&W Model 617, or new Ruger SP-101 in 22LR. This assumes you shoot the Python. If not, then the S&W 686, M19, or GP-100.

A K-frame M19 or M66 is a worthwhile addition to any revolver lover's collection.
If you have a lot of money, an N-frame M27 in your choice of barrel lengths...even better.

OP:

Reading comprehension fail...

I can reload my .44 Special for about half the price of a box of .22 L.R. cartridges!

Bob, I buy my .22RL in bulks at 5 to 8 cents per round. If you reload your .44 for half of that price, I bow to you.

What's a fair price for a pre lock 617?

I am not sure about pre-lock specifically, but 617 in general can be obtained at $600 to $700 in excellent condition. Sometimes a few bucks less. I am not a fan of a lock myself, but I don't know if you need to worry about it on .22 gun. It's not ever going to be used for self/home defense and for the target gun why would you care?

We've talked a bit to you about handloading before...
I may have also mentioned how some longtime handloaders -love- to toss out jaw-dropping numbers to those who don't handload.

It is possible to handload .44 Special for a number that could half your quote, but a lot of things have to line up to make that happen. His point is valid, for sure, you can make some very low-cost handgun ammo by handloading.

But here in July of 2013, it's a tough deal to find primers low enough in cost to make that work. This speaks nothing whatsoever of the other factors in his equation -- an equation that we could really argue over details about. :D

"Rounding out your collection . . "

You make it sound like your next purchase will be your last one as you will have a "complete" collection? You know that's not true . . . it's an addiction . . . there will always be "room for one more". :D

S&W 617 6" with the 10-round stainless cylinder. Then get a matching 686. You can do both in 4", but for target work it's 6" or nothing for me!

I will throw in my .02 worth and say get a .41 mag. The more you shoot one the better you will like it. I have a Model 57 with a 8 3/8" barrel and am activity seeking one with a 4" barrel.

I may be fussy but a lock on my revolver is like having an anchor on my boat anchor. Also if it has more than six shots it belongs in the comic books.
I mean really, would Gene Autry or have Roy Rodgers have anything more than a six shooter? Of course I am aware they managed to get 20 or so shots off before reloading but then they were the good guys and so it is written.
