Round of Choice for a Battle Rifle

If the SHTF I'll want to hit em' and hit em' hard! No playin' around; got my game face on and all that. I want something heavy enough to punch through cover and body armour. .308 is it for me. .223 is not a bad round, has plenty of speed, but that's a caliber more suited for my 115 pound wife.

You don't need gobs of ammo if you don't fire wildly at the moon. Don't get me wrong a healthy supply of ammo is a good thing.

It all comes down to opinion...

Gooch! Look what you started!

Face it, most changes in an Armys 'choice' of armament came as much from political pressure as anything else.

(Off subject) The Osprey was approved because at least one part of that death trap is made in every state - it was a political decision that brought that beast to life!

It was for political reasons that we are now saddled with the 223 as our 'battle round'.

You fella's can debate about wound ballistics velocity, permanent vs. temporary wound channels etc. ad infinitum.

How many of you would willingly choose a 223 to go deer hunting? How many have the skills needed to perfectly place the shot in the kill zone every time? How many soldiers have this same skill...?

I'd prefer to sling a heavy bullet of a large caliber at my enemy, where I wouldn't even worry about my bullet being deflected by a stray bit of ground or vegetation. Where I could be sure that my rounds would penetrate a sandbag enclosure, or punch through a tree trunk. I would want a bullet that is going to crunch through some bones and really send the 'target' into the hurt locker - even if he's wearing armor.

Why is it that the highest classes of body armor are said to stop 308's and not 223's?

My choice of the given cartridges goes to the .308.

.308 also

I didn't mean to start this never ending thread, just wanted some opinions, I fired my new .308 today, and I gotta say it does not pack the punch your Ruger does, but it will get the job done.

Grr

The Gooch

P.S. I no scoped him! :D

I've changed my heart....

After seeing "Quigley Down Under" I feel the ultimate battle round is a .45-120 Sharps. Here you have the big diameter, heavy weight bullet and 1000 yard range. Forget all those lesser rounds, you get 500 grains of bullet and 50% greater diameter than any .30 caliber.

The tang vernier sight allows accurate shooting at any range you can see a target and when that bullet hits, its bound to do damage.

Good thread, but it sure did grow...

I hope this (still) fits here.

Question:
In this "pro-longed" effort, what arm(s) in what round(s) will give me the most available ammo when I must scrounge it from those who's physical condition is such as they do not need it anymore????

As I see it, I'll need a military weapon since military ammo (I would expect) would be in greatest general supply. Now, for this question - I don't care who's military it is in these field events - just what's best. It just has to be the "mostest" generally found laying around no matter where I have to go.

Thanks.

I think the last question is just NATO calibers, .223, .308. 30/06, 7.62 X 39, and 9MM.

Other widely available (Non-NATO) cartridges that I've added to my own list are 12 gauge, .44 Mag, and of course the .45 ACP.

Oh, almost forgot the arms, any .223 rifle that will accept AR/M16 mags, AK's are always a good bet (I should get me one of those!).
Frags, concussion, claymores, whoops, rambling.
